Old Testament and New Testament

Here is a list of women in the Old Testament and New Testament most of whom sought the truth and lived the truth. These women were required and willing to serve the purposes of God.
We acknowledge and thank the hundreds of women not named.

Old Testament
Eve first woman, wife of Adam; acted on the suggestion of the
serpent, evil
Hagar wife of Abraham; mother of Ishmael
Sarah wife of Abraham; mother of Isaac
Rebekah wife of Isaac; mother of Esau and Jacob
Miriam sister of Moses and Aaron
Rahab hid two Hebrew spies in Jericho; ancestor of David
and Jesus
Deborah the fifth judge of Israel and the only female judge;
a prophet
Ruth from Moab, a pagan country; great-grandmother of David
Hannah dedicated her son Samuel to the Lord;
Samuel became the first prophet
Abigail helped David when he was hiding from King Saul;
later became David’s wife
Bath-Sheba wife of Uriah the Hittite, then wife of David and
mother of Solomon
Widow of Zarephath widow with son, willing to give Elijah their last
bit of food
Shunammite woman helped the Prophet Elisha; he healed
her barrenness
Huldah a prophet during the same time that Jeremiah was a prophet
Esther a Jewish queen who saved her people from destruction






New Testament
Mary, mother of Jesus called the Virgin Mary
Elisabeth mother of John the Baptist; her husband was Zacharias
Anna saw the baby Jesus and realized that he was the long-
awaited Messiah
Martha and Mary sisters of Lazarus and followers of Jesus
Three unnamed women healed by Jesus
The Syro-Phoenician woman a Gentile woman whose daughter was
healed by Jesus
Woman of Samaria gave Jesus a drink at the well; recognized Jesus’
divinity and told the elders of the city to come meet him
Mary Magdalene Jesus cast out seven demons; she became one of
Jesus’ followers
Pilate’s wife she defended Jesus and said he shouldn’t be condemned
and crucified
Mary, mother of James and John; present at Jesus’ crucifixion and
resurrection
Salome brought spices to Jesus’ tomb; mother of the disciples
James and John
Mary, mother of John Mark who later wrote the Gospel of Mark
Dorcas raised from the dead by Peter; she was also called Tabitha
Lydia wealthy woman who helped Paul; she heard Paul speak and
became the first convert to Christianity in Europe
Priscilla she and her husband Aquila helped Paul spread the
Gospel of Christianity
Phoebe a wealthy businesswoman who helped Paul
Lois and Eunice Lois was Eunice’s mother; Eunice was the mother of
Timothy who accompanied Paul on his journeys

Jesus The Son of God; The Messiah; through parables and healings, he taught the people that God is all powerful and that man is not material but is also the son of God.

The disciples of Jesus were Simon Peter, Andrew, James the son of Zebedee, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot.

Peter A disciple of Jesus; denied Jesus before the crucifixion but later he raised Dorcas from the dead; he and the Apostle Paul spread Christianity after Jesus ascended.

Apostle Paul in many cities he established churches based on Jesus Christ as the Son of God; wrote letters to encourage these churches; many of the books in the New Testament are letters written by Paul; raised the boy Eutychus from the dead;

Publius chief of the island of Malta; Paul healed Publius’ father

Philip preached the Gospel and healed people

Mark wrote the first story of Jesus’ life several decades after Jesus’
ascension

Matthew Jesus’ disciple; wrote history of Jesus and told about Jesus’
healings and parables

Luke helped the Apostle Paul; wrote about the healings of Jesus in the
book of Luke and the healings of the apostles in the book Acts of the Apostles

John a disciple of Jesus; a strong leader of the disciples after Jesus
ascended; banished to the isle of Patmos where he wrote the book of
Revelation.

Adam first human; did not obey God; banished from Garden of Eden; must have repented because after the birth of his grandson, Enos, then began men to call upon the name of the Lord.

Enoch walked with God: and he was not for God took him

Noah followed God’s directions to build an ark and save mankind and
animals from the flood; Noah walked with God

Abraham had the faith to go to a new land and have only one God;
Father of many nations: Jews, Christians, Muslims

Melchizedek King of Salem; priest of the Most High God; a ‘Christ’ figure.
He blessed Abraham, possessor of heaven and earth

Lot Abraham’s nephew; left Abraham to live in the city of Sodom

Twelve sons of Jacob/Israel settled in Canaan and became the 12 Tribes of Israel: Gad, Reuben, Simeon, Judah, Dan, Levi, Asher, Joseph, Benjamin, Issachar, Zebulon, and Naphtali.

Isaac Abraham and Sarah’s son;
Isaac and Rebekah were parents of Jacob and Esau

Jacob and Esau twin sons of Isaac and Rebekah; Esau sold his birthright
to Jacob; later in life, Esau and Jacob were reunited

Joseph Abraham’s favorite son; he became a prince in Egypt and saved
his brothers who had sold him into slavery because of their jealousy

Moses called by God to lead the Children of Israel out of slavery in
Egypt; received the Ten Commandments; did not cross the Jordan River into the Promised Land

Aaron Moses’ brother who spoke for Moses before Pharaoh;
first High Priest of the Hebrew nation

Joshua led the Children of Israel into Canaan, conquering the city
of Jericho

Gideon a prophet; delivered Israel from the Midianites with only 300 men

Samson last Judge of Israel; destroyed many pagan Philistines by
breaking the pillars holding up the roof of the temple of Dagon

Samuel first Prophet of Israel; anointed Saul then David as Kings
of Israel

Saul first King of Israel; the Children of Israel insisted on
having a king because the nations around them had kings

David as King, he united Israel and Judah into one nation; wrote many
Psalms; an ancestor of Jesus Christ

Absalom son of David who tried to kill David

Solomon David’s son; second King of Israel; built the Temple in Jerusalem;
a ‘wise King’ who wrote the book of Proverbs

Job he lived an honest life before God; ‘Satan’ took everything away but Job remained faithful and would not ‘curse God.’ Everything was restored.

Jonah ran away from God’s directive, spent three days in the belly of a whale, then went forward to ‘preach against and convert the Ninevites,’
as directed

Ahab King of Israel; he and his wife Jezebel worshipped Baal

Elijah God’s prophet who destroyed the ‘prophets of Baal;’ ran away from Jezebel’s death threat; witnessed earthquake, wind, and fire; heard God as a still, small voice; restored a widow’s son to life; did not die but was taken up into heaven; Moses, Elijah, and Jesus appeared to the disciples at the transfiguration

Elisha succeeded the prophet Elijah; advised Kings, preached the Word of God; he sweetened the bitter waters for drinking and healed Naaman
of leprosy

Gehazi Elisha’s servant

Daniel refused to worship the idol set up by King Nebuchadnezzar so he was thrown into a den of lions; the lions did not hurt Daniel for he was obeying God

Nehemiah rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem after Babylon had destroyed
the city

Isaiah a prophet; warned the Israelites that they were not living up to their purpose, but that God would send a Savior

Jeremiah a prophet during the years that Israel was in captivity in Babylon
