Everlasting Punishment

Everlasting Punishment 10-31-2010 Sara Lincoln

The theology of Christian Science clearly states that punishment is not everlasting, but the _______ in sin is punished so long as the belief lasts. SH 497, third tenet. The belief in an error, like 4+4=44, is troublesome and potentially harmful only so long as the false _______ about 4 exists. Punishment cannot be everlasting because it ends as soon as the fa________ be_________ is corrected. One opposite of punish it bl_____. Is there everlasting blessing? _____

Several thousand years ago, the Prophet Isaiah was helping the Children of Israel know the true God. He urged the wicked and the unrighteous to return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. Isa. 55: 7. Is par_____ the opposite of pun_____? ____. Wicked means selfish, disho_______ and determined to h______ others. Unrighteous means to d______ the allness and goodness of G______ and m______. Wicked and unrighteous seem to be states of thought that are potentially harmful but they are counterfeits of T______, God, therefore they must self-destruct.

Have you seen bullying in your school? ___. What does it look like? _____________________
Should the bully be pardoned? ___ punished? ___ corrected? ___

One time ‘a sinner’ washed and kissed Jesus’ feet as he sat at dinner with some Pharisees. She then anointed his feet with expensive oil. Jesus could have said to her you will be punished for your sins. Instead, he said to her, thy s______ are for_______. Luke 7: 48. Why would Jesus forgive her and not punish her? The story begins in Luke 7: 35.

Abraham loved God and his neighbor. He knew about very harmful and ungodlike behavior in two cities called Sodom and Gomorrah and he learned that the Lord would punish these sinful acts and cause the cities to self-destruct. He questioned the Lord, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked? Gen. 18: 23. What do you think the Lord answered? ___________________________________.
Two angels (who looked like men) came to Sodom, and Lot (Abraham’s nephew) gladly brought them into his house. It seemed like everyone in the city had agreed to allow these sinful acts, and the men in Sodom tried to get these angels involved. They almost broke down the door, but Lot protected the angels. Then the angels protected Lot and his family by leading them out of the city, which then began to burn with sulfur (brimstone), making it impossible to breathe,
Gen. 19.

Why didn’t the Lord forgive the sinners in Sodom, like Jesus forgave the sinner who washed and kissed his feet? _______________________________.
Could all of that wicked and unrighteous belief have yielded to God and received mercy and pardon? ______. Christian Science explains that the destruction of s______ is the divine method of par_____. SH 339: 1. God destroys s_______ but pardons s________ who turn away from wi_______ and un_________ beliefs. What is happening to wrong notions about God? They are ________ ______.
SH 357:19-22. I am glad, and I can help save my city and my school by making sure I have no w________ n________ about God or man.

The Prophet Samuel tells about a man named Nabal (see I Sam. 25) who was not like Abraham because he did not love God and his neighbor. Nabal was not like Lot either because he was not generous and helpful. Nabal had 1000 sheep and 1000 goats so he was very rich. David had protected Nabal’s sheep when they were in David’s area, but Nabal refused to feed David’s men who approached him with great respect. Was Nabal acting like a bully? ___. David was angry and insulted. He told 400 of his men to ‘gird on their swords’ and they set out to attack Nabal. Was this action inspired by God? _____. Thank God someone was inspired to stop David, and that person was A________, wife of Nabal, verse 3. She gathered a lot of food and set out to meet David and his men. She bowed before David saying ‘let me take the blame for my husband’s actions.’ Abigail was not foolish. She was hu______ and wi____. She knew David would one day be k______ over Israel and she didn’t want David to regret a bloody revenge.
And David said to Abigail, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, which sent thee this day to meet me: And blessed be thy advice, and blessed be thou, which hast kept me this day from coming to shed blood, and from avenging myself with mine own hand, verse 32-33. David was learning that evil self-de______ according to God’s law and he should not try to intervene or act out hu____ will. Did God pun_____ David for a moment of vengeful anger? ____. God par______ David who said Blessed be the Lord, that hath pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and hath kept his servant from evil, verse 39. God does not punish m_____ but rather redeems m______ from ‘wrong notions.’ God destroys s________ but not s________, if they are willing to yield to God’s will.

‘Sin’ is the belief that there is life, tr_____, and intelligence in m________, and this belief punishes the believer. When will you have the opportunity to refuse and cast out this belief? __

Christian Science explains that ‘sin’ starts small, grows big, and finally governs the so-called man. SH 188: 4. The real man casts out sin. What are the things that are punished? …dishonesty, e______, h_________, revenge ripen into action, only to pass from shame and woe to their final p_____. SH 188: 9-10. Let’s look at the Lord’s Prayer and its spiritual interpretation (SH 16-17) to see if this prayer tells us how to obey God and avoid the punishment of false belief.

How do we help mankind learn that as in heaven, so on earth, -- God is omnipotent, supreme? SH 17: 1-3. Science and Health tells us how: At all times and under all circumstances, overcome evil with good. Know t______, and God will supply the w_______ and the occasion for a victory over evil. Clad in the panoply of Love, human hatred cannot reach you. SH 571: 15.

False belief in mortal selfhood and material sense is so-called thinking that is p____________.

Probation After Death 10-24-10 Sara Lincoln

Are you and I on ‘probation after death’ right now? Yes ___ No__ I don’t know ___. Perhaps the spiritual thinker needs to ask, what do you mean by ‘death’? and how does ‘probation’ apply to ‘death’? Let’s posit some preliminary responses to these questions, then see what this Bible Lesson adds to our understanding of what ‘death’ and ‘probation’ mean.

Is ‘belief’ in mortality all around us? ___ Mortality means se______ from G____. Is the ‘fact’ of mortality all around us? ___ How often does belief have to yield to fact? __________________ Why doesn’t someone just get rid of belief so that all we can know is fact? Someone did! In fact, many-ones did! Name someone who got rid of belief in mortality: ________________________
If someone, many-ones, got rid of belief then belief is dead. Right? _____
Isaiah declared the death of death over 2000 years ago. Isa. 35: 8: He {the glory of the Lord} will swallow up death in victory, and the Lord God will wipe away tears from off all faces…

Are we, like our predecessors, continuing to prove that there is no m________ m_______ that can believe in death? ______. Are we willing to do this, even though it isn’t always easy? _____

There is something that has to die. If it’s not ‘man,’ what is it? SH 290: 23. ________________
Universal salvation {everyone free of death} rests on pro________ and pro________, and is unattainable without them. SH 291: 12.

Did Peter stay in this state of grief? _____. He accepted from the Christ a regeneration, which means a re______. Even though he didn’t make a good grade on the ‘probation’ test, God’s love, the Christ, made sure Peter learned what he needed to learn. Just as death is not more real than life, so a lie is not more real than truth. During ‘probation,’ do we show that we are sticking with the facts and casting out beliefs? ___

Is defeat the result of experience? ___. P______ is born of experience. SH 296: 4-12. The death of a false m_____ s______ and of s___…is what reveals man and Life, harmonious, real, and eternal. One of the earliest stories about at-one-ment is in __________. One of the earliest stories about separation is in __________.

A theologian is one who studies and teaches about ________. Do most theologians believe that God and man are s__________? ____. They say religion can help man reconnect with God. Did the o________, o________, and o_________ allow man to become disconnected? _____. Which theologians saw correctly that Creator and creation are ever at-one? _______________________
One of them, P______, wrote a letter to the Christians in Rome, thanking God and them that they had obeyed from the heart that form of d______ which Paul had taught them. Rom. 6: 17. They had been serving the ‘sin of s_______,’ but Christ Jesus broke down the middle wall of partition between God and man. One doctrine of Christian Science is that ‘e_____ and m______ have neither intelligence nor power.’ SH 454: 10
Man-made doctrines are w_______, which means _______________. SH 134: 14. Man-made doctrines cannot help us because they deny the possibility of Christian h_______, line 18. The doctrines (teachings) of C______ J______ and C________ S________ are the same: There is only one God-C______ and that’s Good. God is A___ so Cause and E______ are one and good. You and I really can prove that each of us is the i_______ and l________ of God. Gen. 1: 26-27.

What is it that shuts the door on spiritual healing? SH 132: 20-24. ________ ________.

This is having our part in the a___-o____-m______ with Truth and Love. SH 21: 1-5. At-one-ment is not just a theory. At-one-ment is the foundation on which we build lives that honor God and bless others.

The chief priests thought they had a right to put Jesus to death for the sin of b________ because Jesus said he was the S____ of G____. Mark 14: 55-64. The only blasphemy (sin against God) is to say ‘I am se________ from God; I am a mortal, made by mortals.’ This is the belief (blasphemy?) that some theologians (doctrines) preach, but will it ever be true? ____. How do you know? Because the record of a material creation will never be true, and because the Word of God is always true and the words of human opinions are not always ______. Are Sin, Disease, and Death Real?

Are Sin, Disease, and Death Real? 10-10-10 Sara Lincoln

Does Creator-God have any real enemies? ___ Does creation-man have any real enemies? ___ Do humans seem to have enemies? ___. Are these enemies ‘other people’? ___. The only enemies humans seem to have are ___________________. A Psalmist said Mine enemies would daily swallow me up, Ps. 56: 2, 4. Maybe seee was thinking about ‘people;’ maybe about sin, disease, and death. But seee made a very important choice not to f____ but rather to t____ and to p______ God’s word.
Mortal mind is the worst ____ of the body, while divine Mind is its best _________. SH 176: 19.

Does every ‘bad thing’ fit into one of these three categories: sin, disease, or death? ____
Discouragement and helplessness are bad things. They belong in the category called _______.
Is sin mortalnomind trying to separate us from God? ___ Complete this brief definition of sin: Sin is a b________ in a p________ opposed to God.

Frequently we revisit Gen. 1: 26 which states that God gave _______ to man (females and males). Over what? f______, f______, c_______, and creeping things. Do you want dominion over these things, or something else? _______________________________________
I think many people (including me) would like to accept and feel dominion over s____, d_____, and d_____. Did Christ Jesus have dominion over these? ____. He intended us to have it too because he said ‘rise up’ to the person who could not stand.

If I accept dominion over ______, the other two (d______ and d______) will fade away and disappear. SH 426: 28-29. It’s a sin to believe you have a m_____ of your own. It’s a sin to believe you can choose and know something God did not make, namely e______. Does the Bible teach us that God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life? ___. Gen. 2: 7. Another name, L_____ G_____, identifies the supposed creator of people with minds of their own who could choose to eat (believe) that evil is as real as good.

The truthteller in Genesis 1 describes the ‘very good’ creation of God. This is the Science of Genesis. SH 525: 22. The tree-fruit-leaves created by God were for the healing of the nations. Rev. 22: 2. The storyteller in Genesis 2 put his characters in a Garden called ________. In this imaginary place, there was a lot of mist and not much light to see by. This garden had a tree with poisonous fruit and it also had a creeping thing called a s_______.
Two thousand years after this storyteller described a make-believe creation, Mary Baker Eddy proved that this material creation story is a lying suggestion, not a real event. In K______ to the S________ (Science and Health, page 500) the chapter called G______ describes the real good creation of the One God, and the so-called harmful and disobedient creation of another god. How important is it to know the difference between God’s creation and an imaginary creation? ____

How does the SH dictionary called the G______ (SH 570) define KNOWLEDGE?

see part two

Through Christian Science, the true story of creation is being proved true again, every day. So why would anyone still believe the lie? It’s a trick. Your student dictionary says that a trick is an action intended to d________ or c________. Man does not have such an intention, but the s_________ does. Serpent is a symbol for a deceiving, cheating ‘thought’ trying to harm you. The spiritual thinker says STOP RIGHT THERE. God is good; God is Mind; therefore mind is good. There is no evil mind that can invent s_____, d______, and d______. I am so glad this is true! I give thanks for this fact every day, and remember it when the lie wears a disguise that looks like truth.

When sin, disease, and death seem real to you, what can you do?
You can stand up (mentally) and say to material sense you are not good, therefore, you are not real. Truth is telling me what is good and real, and the light of this telling pierces the mist you are hiding in.

Science and Health says that it is wisdom that warns man not to be fooled by the testimony of error… SH 481: 12-15. Error is m________ s________. Can I ask of every thought and event every day ‘did God send this’? ___. If God did not send it, I can say………………..

Are sin, disease, and death real? NO. These words of the Psalmist are true and real: Ps. 103: 1-4.

Mary Baker Eddy designated 26 topics for our weekly Lesson Sermons. With each reappearance in a year, there are different passages to study in the B________ and S____________________. Why do you think she phrased this topic as a question?
Was she sure or unsure about the answer? _____________________

In 1866, Mary Baker Eddy’s friends thought she was about to die. She asked for her Bible and opened it to Matthew 9, which tells about Jesus healing a paralyzed man. Suddenly she realized the presence of that same haling power and she too was completely healed. She asked herself, how did this happen? She knew the answer was in the Bible so she studied it deeply for three years. Out of that study came the textbook that helps all of us find healing in the Bible. The name of that textbook is __________.

Let’s re-word the title of this week’s lesson so that we can answer YES.

Would you say that was ‘right reasoning’? ____ Another way of describing the Light is sp________ ex________. SH 492: 3. We can always prove that this is the reality, and ma________ ex________ is the unreality. The Apostle Paul said the same, as expressed in Science and Health: When spiritual being is understood…then shall man be found in His likeness. SH 325: 13
