Christ Jesus

Christ Jesus 2-28-10 Sara Lincoln

In the Bible, he is most often called ________ ________ (189 times) but in Science and Health he is most often called __________ __________ (258 times). Why the difference?

Here are three of the titles of Jesus. C________ is the Greek word; M_______________ is the Hebrew word; and S___________ is the English word.
SH 326: 12-14.

Before Jesus lived his life as the Son of God and the Son of Man, Jesus and other Jews studied ‘the Law and the Prophets,’ but the Jews didn’t call these writings the ‘Old Testament.’ Why not?
The book of the prophet Malachi, the _________ book in the Old Testament, reveals God’s promise to the Jews: “Unto you that fear my name shall the __________ _____ __________________ arise with healing in his wings.” Mal. 4: 2. Did Malachi’s prophecy come true? ____ Who called Jesus ‘the Son of man’?
SH 482: 16-17.___________

Jesus started his career of teaching and healing after receiving ______________ from John the Baptist. When Jesus came up out of the water, “a voice from heaven” called Jesus “my ________________ ___________.” Mark 1: 11
Then Jesus gave that title to every one who received him. Jesus gave everyone, gives us, the power to become “the ___________ _____ _________.” John 1: 12

God says to everyone, everywhere, if you believe in my Son, __________ __________, you will have real life, which is everlasting life. John 3: 16. Jesus also says to everyone, everywhere, if you believe in me, you can do the ____________ that I do. SH 326: 4-5

I thank Mary Baker Eddy for our textbook which provides such a simple and true explanation regarding ‘Jesus’ and ‘Christ:’ “Jesus is the ____________ ________, and Christ is the ____________ __________; hence the duality of Jesus the Christ.” SH 473: 16.

Most people believe they are living a material, mortal selfhood and so can’t yet know God and Christ and man’s oneness with God. Christian Science says to them and us, all you have to do is “_________ ________ ________ and lose sight of mortal ________________.” SH 316: 3-7.
This may not always be e_______, but it is always p____________.

Last week, we reviewed the story of a young girl. Everyone else thought she was dead, but Jesus knew that God does not make a life that dies, so he told her to wake up and get up. And she did.
This week, we have the story of a nobleman who urged Jesus to come heal his son who was near death. This time, Jesus did not go to the home. What did he do instead and what happened? John 4: 46-53.
Jesus’ demonstrations were so powerful because of his ______________ to God, the P______________ of being. SH 25: 16-19.
“Mighty works” are very natural because they are a sign of I______________, “God with us,” ‘a divine influence ever present in human consciousness’… SH xi: 14-21
“Christ is the true idea voicing good, the divine message from God to men, speaking to the _______________ _______________.” SH 332: 9.

One time a man asked Jesus’ disciples to heal his son who was ‘lunatick.’ They were not successful, so the man asked Jesus to heal his son. Jesus ‘rebuked the devil’ and the child was cured. Later the disciples asked, ‘why couldn’t we cast out that devil?’ Jesus answered them, because of your __________. If you will just have f__________, even if it seems very little, nothing will be impossible, but the thing you need, beyond faith, is ____________ and ____________. Matt. 17: 14-21
We can learn something new about faith today. It’s more than wavering ‘belief.’ It needs to be advanced to _____________ ________________, to evidence gained from Spirit. SH 23: 16.
The prayer that…heals…is “an _____________ faith that all things are possible to God, -- …” SH 1: 1-4. Is this the kind of faith Jesus had? ________

Jesus did not want people to think of him as merely a material man with a mighty mind. He wanted people to know that he was the ________ ____ ________. “Who do you think I am?” he asked his disciples. ____________ said, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Jesus was grateful for this true answer, and said to ____________, “upon this rock I will build my ____________; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Matt. 16: 13-18.
Was Peter himself the ‘rock,’ or was his s_____________ u______________ the ‘rock’? __ SH 138: 6-9, 14-16.
There is a big church in Rome, Italy called St. Peter’s, dedicated to God and governed by Peter’s alleged ‘successor,’ the p______. There is a big-enough church in East Lansing called F_______ __________________ dedicated to God and the words and works of __________ _________ as explained by Christian Science. If it’s ‘church’ it proceeds from divine P_________. SH 583: 12

Jesus knew that ‘the elders and chief priests and scribes’ would convince the Romans to crucify him. Jesus agreed to let that happen so that he could prove that man has only one ________ that cannot be killed. After his resurrection, he appeared to the disciples and criticized them because of their “______________ and _______________ of heart” (Mark16: 14) but he didn’t dwell on their mistakes. He looked ahead and saw the good they would do for Christianity. This good thing would result in the writing of the ________ Testament. He told the disciples to go forth into the world to preach and heal. And they did. He tells us to do the same thing, and we do.

About 20 years after Jesus ascended, a man named ___________ wrote letters, encouraging the new Christian churches. ______’s letters became the first books of the N______ T___________.

When Peter and John healed a man that had been lame all his life, the observers got all excited and focused on Peter and John, but Peter corrected their wrong idea that it was ‘person’ that did the healing. He said, “The ________ of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the _______ of our fathers, hath glorified his Son ________; And his name through faith in his name hath made this man strong….”
Acts 3: 2-9, 11-13, 16.
“Understanding spiritual _______ and knowing that there is no material _______, Jesus said: ‘These signs shall follow them that believe…’” SH 328: 20 – 27. The ‘signs’ are healings of everything that needs healing. Are there still ‘signs’ today? _______ That’s because people who study Christian Science understand spiritual ________ and how to heal themselves and others through an inspired acknowledgment of each one’s relationship to the Christ man that Jesus taught and proved.

Mind

Mind 2-21-10 Sara Lincoln

Can you “let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus?” ____ Phil. 2: 5.
Do you “let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus?” _____ How do you know?

The Psalmist said, ‘I get so many thoughts from God I can’t even count them!’
And “I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.”
Ps. 40: 7-8.
Is the Psalmist’s ‘heart’ the same as the Psalmist’s ‘mind’? ____
Perhaps the prophet Jeremiah answered this question about 2500 years ago. How does Jeremiah relate ‘thoughts’ (mind) and ‘heart’? Jer. 29: 11, 13.

The Apostle Paul tells us who does not welcome ‘the things of the Spirit of God, or you might say, ‘the things of the Mind of God; the Mind that is God.’
I Cor. 2: 14, 16. ________
And Mary Baker Eddy concurs where she says “Christian Science demonstrates that none but the ____________ _____ ____________ can see God, as the gospel teaches.” SH 337: 14-16.

I like to think of myself as a thinker. Do you too? ______What does it mean to be
‘a thinker’?
Apparently Mary Baker Eddy respected ‘thinkers.’ What are the first words in line 13 in the Preface of Science and Health?

How did she test or measure the spiritual quality of her thoughts? “By thousands of well-authenticated cases of ____________, she and her students have proved the worth of her ______________.” SH x: 15-17.
Spiritual thinking and understanding, which we reflect from Mind, result in ____________.

The author of Proverbs told us this about 3000 years ago: “_______________ is a wellspring of ____________ unto him that hath it.” Prov. 16: 22.

When will you have learned enough from Mind that you are ready to graduate and proceed on your own? ________ The author of Science and Health says she is ever ‘waiting at the heavenly gate for the __________ _____ ____________.’ SH ix: 16.

David, who was King of Israel about ____________B.C., wanted very much to build a ‘house’ for God, a t___________, in Jerusalem. He needed a proper place to put the ‘ark of the covenant.’ What did this box (ark) contain? __________________God said, no, it won’t be you, David. Your son S____________ will build it. David was gracious about this decision and set about the task of teaching his son to serve God “with a perfect ___________ and a willing _________: for the Lord searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee.” I Chron. 28: 9. Solomon did seek God, and
when he became King, he asked God to give him an ‘understanding heart so that he could judge the people well.’ What was God’s response? I Kings 3: 11-12.

Solomon did build it and it was the greatest temple ever built by the Jews. It stood for about 900 years, until the Roman army destroyed it in 60 B.C. When Jesus was 12, he visited the smaller Temple in Jerusalem, built to replace Solomon’s Temple. While his parents were looking for him, do you remember what he was doing? He was “sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and __________ __________ ____________.” The boy Jesus did not think his understanding was limited just because he was only 12 years of age. Is your understanding limited? ______Luke 2: 46.

Last Sunday we talked about one’s soul as being one’s motive or purpose. ‘Motive’ is mental and so it belongs to M_______. Our textbook says, “The purpose and motive to live aright can be gained now. This point won, you have ____________ as you should…and nothing but wrong intention can hinder your advancement. SH 326: 16

Could this be true? That nothing can hinder your progress and advancement? ________
Shall we say, ‘the sky’s the limit’? ________

Simeon was a man who went often to the Temple to pray. One day, he saw the baby Jesus there, took the baby into his arms, and said “Mine eyes have seen ________ ____________...a light to lighten the ____________, and the glory of thy people ____________” Luke 2: 25-30.
Did Simeon believe that a man’s mind is limited, or unlimited? ___________ He saw the future because he was faithful to the one ____________.
“One only of the following statements can be true:…” What are the two statements, and which one is true? SH 270: 2-4.

Again we have the story of the woman with a bleeding problem who managed to touch Jesus’ garment, “and straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up” and she knew she was healed. Jesus healed her because he knew he (and she) were reflections of divine Mind, and yet he said to the woman, “Daughter, thy __________ hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.” Mark 5: 34. ____________ is mental, and thus an expression of ________. Everyone has enough __________ because everyone has enough ___________.
Jesus could tell what was going on in so-called ‘mortal mind,’ not by focusing on mortal mind or belief, but by staying focused on ____________ ____________. Can you do the same? ______
Jesus knew that it was not _________ calling for his help, but rather ________ _________ SH 86: 1-8.

Tell us about the healing of the little girl, daughter of ‘a ruler of the synagogue.’ Who in this story was not listening to Mind? _________ What did Jesus say to them? _________________ Luke 8: 40-42, 51-55.
What wonderful healings Mind can accomplish when
“Science reveals only one Mind, and this one shining by its own __________ and ____________ the universe, including man, in perfect ____________. “ SH 510: 28-1.

Why is it important that you pray to God as Mind?

Spirit

Spirit 2-7-10 Sara Lincoln

Jesus often used parables to teach something. What is a parable?

Jesus used about 39 parables. Do you remember the one about the shepherd who lost a sheep?
You can find it in Matt. 18: 12-14 and in Luke 15: 3-7.
Mary Baker Eddy wrote a poem called “Feed My Sheep.” We often sing this poem which begins…

What is the parable about the sower and the seed? Three Gospel writers record this parable Matt. 13: 1-23; Mark 4: 1-20; Luke 8: 4-15.
The seed fell in four places: the _____ ______; __________ places; thorns;
and into ‘_________ __________’ where the seed could grow into a plant and bear fruit.

In his teaching, Jesus used language that helped the listener understand. Not only did Jesus use parables, but he also used metaphors. It is a metaphor when a thing in one category is compared to a thing in another category. Jesus said, for example, “I am the door.” John 10: 7 and 9. In John 15: 1-17, the metaphor is about ‘husbandman --- vine --- branch --- and fruit.’

The husbandman is __________
The vine is __________
The branch is __________
The fruit is __________

This metaphor, ‘good ground,’ means that the listener hears Jesus’ teaching, accepts it, knows that it is true, and acts on it. These responses bring forth good ‘fruit,’ maybe a little; maybe a lot!

Science and Health explains that the ‘good ground’ is s__________ s__________.
SH 272: 3-8.
“God is Spirit; therefore the language of Spirit must be, and is, _______________. SH 117: 6-7.
If you want to speak and understand ‘the language of Spirit,’ you can practice the skill of using spiritual sense to see and describe everything in your daily life, and keep on practicing it!

Jesus sometimes revealed that he knew what others were thinking. Mark 2: 3-12.
Jesus knew that the scribes were silently accusing him of blasphemy. Human sense might call this intu___________, but Spirit’s sense calls it sp__________ ins__________.

Christ Jesus teaches that “…man is the offspring of __________.” SH 63: 5. Genesis 1 says something similar: God made man in His own __________ ____ ____________. It is through
__________ that we learn about this spiritual origin of man. It is called a __________ because it is the law of God which we can study and learn and __________. SH 476: 32-5.

When the Apostle Paul wrote a letter to the church in Galatia, he said that Spirit (like a tree) bears fruit. It produces things that are useful and very desirable. Spirit is expressed, for example, as affection for others, joy, peace, patience (longsuffering), kindness (gentleness), goodness, faithfulness, and self-control.

Which three ‘fruits of the Spirit’ do you express often? Underline them.
Are there any ‘fruits of the Spirit’ that you need to express (act out) more often than you are doing at present? Circle these.

Our fruits “prove what the understanding of God brings to man.” SH 496: 13-14.
Our textbook (__________ ____ __________) suggests two questions that can help us measure our spiritual progress.

How would you answer these two questions? _____

Jesus’ mission was “to ______ what God is and what he ______ ____ ______.”

SH 390: 32-4.

Some of the men and women who did this ‘rising’ are named in these lists: Women in the Bible and Men in the Bible. There is a brief descriptor beside each name, but let’s fold the paper to cover the descriptor. Which names do you recognize? Put a check mark by that name.
Do you think we should recognize these individuals as our Bible Friends? _____ Why?
