Love

Love 1-31-10 Sara Lincoln

God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. Gen. 1: 31
How lovely and loving that God still sees everything He is making and doing, and behold it is very good for _______________
The Psalmist reminds us many times that “The Lord is ________ to all: and his ________ ________ are over all his works.” Ps. 145: 9.

Why is it important for us to know all the time that we are greatly loved?
Every time people attend our church, they see this reminder on the wall: SH 494: 10:

What is the difference between a ‘desire’ for some thing and a ‘need’ for some thing?
The human mind calls something a ‘need’ (like love and food) but the D________ M________ calls everything, including love and food, a ‘gift.’
The need is gifted and every gift is a need, -- the need to share every gift. What gifts do you have?
You have the gift of Love//love and so you need to share __________ and __________
We need Divine Love because “Divine Love __________ and ___________ man.” SH 6: 3.

The Lord’s Prayer indicates that when Christ Jesus talked about God and talked to God, he called God __________. Christ Jesus constantly proved the caring, comforting, mothering actions of God, so Mary Baker Eddy talks about God as ______¬____ -- ___________ As we acknowledge and identify with Love//love it becomes more natural to prove that “The power of __________ __________ and __________ __________ is omnipotent. It is indeed adequate to unclasp the hold and to destroy disease, sin, and death.” SH 412: 13. It becomes more natural to prove that infinite M_______ is my mind; I manifest divine Mind. Who said, “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.” ________ Phil. 2: 5.

Is will-power one of the gifts of God? ______ What man in the New Testament used a lot of will-power to harm the new religious group called Christians? ________ . Mind//Love changed this man so completely that he traveled to far-away places to tell people why they should believe in Christ Jesus. It is __________ that dissolves the enemies of God and man called “______ -- _______, ______ --______________. and ______--_______.” SH 242: 15.

What is the full title of the fifth book in the New Testament? ________________________
How loving that God told his disciple, A_________, to help S__________ who had been blinded temporarily by the Christ-light. This light and inspiration showed Saul he should not kill Christians. What special life-purpose did God have for S______, later called _______? Acts 9: 10-20
(verse 15). Christian Science explains what Love made possible for a man who was acting out hate and ignorance. What did Love give to Saul?

If “Love for _______ _____ _______” is your reason for everything you do, you will always know what to do and how to do it. Such is the effect of _________. SH 454: 17-19 and 22.

Paul loved and shared the Christ message. Love protected Paul and kept him going.
The Jewish leaders tried to kill Paul, just as they had tried to kill _________. Love made sure Paul learned about this plot. He couldn’t leave by the town gates where the would-be murderers were waiting. So how did Paul escape? Acts 9: 22-25.

It can be ‘voluntary’ which means Or it can be ‘involuntary’ which means
Christian Science explains that hatred cannot harm you when you are covered (clad) in the covering (panoply) of ________. SH 571: 18.

Jewish leaders insisted and so the Roman government agreed to send Paul to Rome to be tried…and found guilty of preaching an illegal religion. A storm destroyed the ship, but no passengers were harmed because Paul knew that L________ and L________ were in control. When they got to the island of Melita, who did Paul help and heal? Acts 28: 1, 7-9.

The more I use spiritual sense, the more I am grateful that Love provides it and grows it. Love is one of the ____________ for God. In our textbook, Love-love appears 489 times. The synonym that appears most often is M________, and next most often is T________. Mrs. Eddy was explaining the Science of Christianity. Was she explaining a human science or a Divine Science?______ It is logical to use the words Mind//mind and Truth//truth to explain a science because ‘science’ is about using the m________ to find or prove the t________.

Omniscience = all knowledge = Good.
The dictionary says that science means knowledge that can be studied and learned, as in a sport. .What knowledge do you study and learn in your sport of ___________? Truth

Truth 1-24-10 Sara Lincoln

Everyone has a consciousness. It seems like there can be good and bad in consciousness, but thanks to Christian Science, we have a true idea about consciousness: “The divine understanding reigns, is all, and there is no other consciousness.” SH 536: 9. How does this fact help you?

The divine Mind, God, gives us all good, gives us true thoughts and feelings like patience, confidence, trust, and expectation of good. Mind wants us to know only ‘the facts’ and helps us know them. Thank you God!
Mortalnomind, animal magnetism, however, tries to take over our feelings (thoughts) and make us agree to impatience, worry, fear, and doubt. This no-mind does not ask ‘what are the facts?’
As we learn about God and man through Christian Science, we learn to turn away from human thoughts, which can be negative or positive, and turn toward the all-knowing ________ This Mind, God, which loves us, gives us sp_________ thoughts, spiritual consciousness.
Jesus was able to bless himself and others because he chose to have and use only sp_______________ con__________________. Can you do the same? ______.
Another word for ‘fact’ would be T_______. Is T________ part of the definition of God? ____ Is T_________ another name for God? ______. Is T________ our subject for today? ______

A prophet of God is focused on listening to God and doing God’s will.
Are you a prophet? ____
The Prophet Elijah agreed to have the qualities of patience, confidence, trust, and expectation of good. When Elijah had no food because of a famine in the land, he did not panic! No. Never. He trusted divine Mind that told him to go to the home of a poor widow. She was able to feed him because Elijah helped her prove the law of God – that there is always enough. Later, when her son suddenly died, Elijah did not panic. He prayed with confidence and expectation of good.
What happened next? I Kings 17: 8-10, 17, 22-24.

The author of Psalm 119 is very bold and spiritually minded when he says, I have more understanding than all my teachers because I know, I think about, and I keep this law of God: “to all mankind and in every hour, divine Love supplies all good.” SH 494: 13.

Three thousand years ago, the Children of Israel were slaves in Egypt. God told ________ to lead the Hebrews out of Egypt and take them to the P___________ L________. This story is told in the book of __________ in the Bible. Have you read and discussed this story before? ___
If we know the basic story, why would we review it again and again?

“Progress is the law of God” (SH 233: 6). I am a manifestation of God. Am I always making spiritual progress as well as human progress? _____.
Each time I reconsider the Exodus story, I can desire and have new questions about what happened and what the story has to do with me, if anything, since it happened so long ago.
The only way you and I can grow in our understanding of Truth is to ask questions.
What kind of questions?.......
We cannot be content with questions that only test our memory, for example, ‘what was Moses’ first response to God’s directive to liberate the Hebrews?’ Ex. 3: 10-11.

No, we must demand questions that make us think and discover, for example, ‘why did it take 40 years and 800 miles of wandering to reach the Promised Land when the direct route was only about 200 miles?’ Even if they stopped often to rest and listen for God’s further directions, it wouldn’t take 40 years to travel 200 miles, would it? ______. Why did the journey take so long?

In one of your classes in school, did you ever have a question but you didn’t ask it because you were afraid the class or teacher might laugh at you? ______ Yes, it’s good to think before speaking or questioning, asking yourself, for example, ‘What do I already know? What is my motive in asking?’ But it is good to ask questions. The most intelligent people ask questions. When you ask a question, you show that you are, or want to be, mentally engaged, not dozing on the sidelines!

Here’s a question that interests me, and I hope you too. In the Ten Commandments (Ex. 20) how many commands are never do this’? __ How many commands are always do this’? ___.
Let’s look in the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5 – 7, to see if we can spot any beatitudes that imply never or always.
Jesus called himself “…the way the _________, and the life…” John 14: 6.
Jesus also said something about Truth which is on the wall of our church: “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall ________ _______ ________.” John 8: 32. In what two places in this statement can you insert the word always? ______

In the Scientific Statement of Being, let’s see if Christian Science gives us some never and always commands. Is the first sentence a never command? ______ Is the last sentence a never and an always command? ______ In the other sentences, where can you insert an always or a never, for example, Always Spirit is immortal Truth; always matter is mortal error.
What would be another example?......
How many ‘commands’ are there? _______It seems to me there are ______ never commands, and there are _______ always commands.

Please make a prediction. In Science and Health, which synonym for God appears most often? _______
Which of these words appears most often: never or always?______ An always statement on the wall of our church auditorium says:

But the word never appears 3 times more often than the word always in Science and Health! What computer program did I use to find this out? __________ People can buy this program in the Christian Science Reading Room. You can look up anything in the Bible or the textbook.

What can you and I learn from these facts that Mind//mind appears 1334 times and Truth // truth is used almost 1000 times. The word never appears 3 times more often than always.
What are the implications of these facts as we practice ‘knowing the Truth’?

“The eternal ________ destroys what mortals seem to have learned from ________, and man’s real existence as a child of God comes to light.” SH 288: 31-1.

Life

Life 1-17-10 Sara Lincoln

“You are what you eat” (a popular saying). “You are what you know” (Prov. 4: 13).
Which statement is more true, and why? …….

What are the first five books of the Old Testament? ….
They are known as ‘the Law of Moses.’ After the Children of Israel returned to Jerusalem from captivity in Babylon about 538 B.C., Nehemiah directed the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem. The people gathered to listen to Ezra the scribe read from Moses’ Law and then he and Nehemiah explained the meaning of it. The people were so happy and declared it a holy day!
Does Christian Science honor the Law of Moses? _____ What is your proof?
The teachings of Christian Science help anyone obey the Law of Moses to a much higher and more satisfying degree.

Mary Baker Eddy must have understood what a joy this was for the people to hear again the inspiring word of the law of God. What did she choose as the first tenet? (A tenet is a belief or doctrine held to be true).

Christian Science says that we can prove that “the Bible contains the recipe for all healing.” SH 406: 1. Christian Science also teaches that “The ________ __________ taught in the original language of the Bible came through inspiration, and needs ____________ to be understood.”
SH 319: 21.

In most churches, people listen to the Pastor’s sermon, hoping for inspiration. The ‘sermon’ in a Christian Science church does not come from the inspired words of a man or woman who is the Pastor or Minister. Mrs. Eddy chose something else as Pastor of the Christian Science Church. What did she choose?

Most Christian churches teach that God knows good and evil and so does man, because both good and evil are real. The Christian Science Church teaches that God is …………
and man is ……………..
When she was a young girl, Mrs. Eddy honored the Pastors of her church. As a grown woman, still searching for a God she could believe in, she discovered God’s law, the Science of being. “This Science teaches man that God is the only ________, and that this Life is ____________ and __________; that God is to be ____________, adored, and demonstrated; that __________ Truth casts out suppositional error and heals the sick.” SH 471: 23-4.

There will be many people and happenings in your life over the next 100 years. If you keep honoring “the truth of being” as taught in Christian Science, you will always know how to find the blessing in every person and event.

The Prophet Isaiah said, “And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times, and strength of ____________. Isa. 33: 6. How would you explain ‘salvation’ in your own words? ..

The big, tall clock in the foyer of our church has a p___________. Each back and forth is one second of time. How does Science and Health use the pendulum as a metaphor? SH 246: 1-5. Good writers make good use of metaphors. Do you like this metaphor? ____ Why?

Does a clock, or time, have anything to do with Life? _____ That’s because Life is ______. “Life is __________. We should find this out, and begin the demonstration thereof. Life and ________ are immortal.” SH 246: 27.
You can I can have the ___________ consciousness of being if we will learn it, accept it, and ________it. SH 264: 15-19.

One time a ruler asked Jesus how he could “inherit eternal life.” When Jesus answered, he quoted the Law of ___________, Luke 18: 20.
But then Jesus went beyond the Law of Moses. Verse 22 shows that Jesus told the rich ruler to sell everything, give the money to the poor, and follow him. The ruler was not willing to do that. Do you think you would you be willing to do that? ______

Did Jesus want the man to be poor and homeless? _____ Was Jesus poor and homeless? ____
Was Jesus talking about the value of having priorities? ___ Luke 18: 22-27.
Would you rather have a new game or understand all things? …..
Christ Jesus does not make impractical demands but he does make the practical demand that we give up (sacrifice) every thing that keeps us from having all good. Christian Science explains how we need to move forward from desire to sacrifice if we truly want all good. SH 11: 22-25.
We must give up the ____________ sense of life, substance, and intelligence in order to truly have these through a _____________ sense of each one. SH 311: 28.

Do you really want to ‘live, move, and have {your} being in Life, God?’ ______ SH 381: 17. What will you do with thoughts that present man as “fallen, sick, sinning, and dying”? SH 259: 10.
As usual, the Psalmist and Mrs. Eddy say it well. Let’s read together these two teachings from our Pastor: Ps. 118: 17 and SH 427: 246: 27.

Sacrament

Sacrament 1-10-10 Sara Lincoln

There was an event in Jesus’ life called The Last Supper. Who was there? What special thing happened after they finished supper? Matt. 26: 26-28

The dictionary says that ‘sacrament’ is a formal religious act that symbolizes a spiritual reality.
All other religions (at least all the ones I know about) include two formal religious acts that have deep spiritual meanings: b________ and s________. In b________, the minister uses water and for the s_________ the minister uses bread and wine (or grape juice). Churches are honoring Christ Jesus who instructed us to remember him by ‘taking the cup, and ‘eating the bread.’
Matt. 26: 26-28.
In the Christian Science church, do we use water in baptism or bread and wine for the sacrament? ____ Thank you Mary Baker Eddy for bringing to Christianity a more spiritual meaning of baptism and sacrament.
‘Baptism’ is _____________________________________. SH 581: 23.
“The baptism of Spirit, washing the body of all the impurities of flesh, signifies that the ______ ____ ______ see God and are approaching spiritual Life and its demonstration.” SH 241: 27.
“Our baptism is a _________________ from all error.” SH 35: 19.

“Our Eucharist {sacrament] is ____________ ______________ with the one God. Our bread, ‘which cometh down from heaven’ is _________. Our cup is the _______.”
SH 35: 25-27.
Science and Health says there is something more important than the ‘material symbols’ of water, bread, and wine. Science and Health says, as Christ Jesus said, “…take up the ______, heal the ______, cast out ________, and preach Christ, or Truth, to the poor, -- the ________ _______...” SH 34: 13.
You and I are preaching Christ or Truth every time we remember to be an ex______________ of honesty, purity, faith, and l______. God inspires us to say true words and do good deeds.
What does it mean to be an example of love and purity? Tell us about a time you were willing to be an example of good and God-likeness.

Christ Jesus means ‘Jesus the anointed.’ SH 313: 1-8.
While Jesus and his disciples were eating together at ‘the last supper,’ what were the chief priests and elders doing? Matt. 26: 59.
Why did they want to kill Jesus who was also a Jew, like them?
Their hope was to find a Messiah (savior) who would overthrow the Roman occupation. But Jesus had a different purpose, a higher aim. He came to teach them and all the people how to overthrow “…all manner of s___________ and all manner of d__________ among the people.” Matt. 4: 23. The chief priests were not interested in a pure state of thought that could heal.
Which chapter in Science and Health focuses on Jesus’ purpose? _________________________.
Jesus had a special commission (appointed task) to prove what? SH 54: 13-16.

What does it mean to ‘sacrifice’ something?
If we try to do everything through Love, we will not lose anything by sacrificing. We cannot lose anything because Love is giving us everything good. “Love enriches the nature, _____________, ________________, and _________________ it.” SH 57: 23-24.

Did Christ Jesus give up or sacrifice his life? _____ Jesus was willing to be the ex__________ of l________ which cannot be killed because Life is God and life is God’s permanent expression

Water and oil are important symbols in the Bible.
II Kings 5 tells the story of N________, an army captain, who had a skin disease called leprosy. How did a little maid, about your age, help Naaman find his healing?
John 12: 3 tells about Mary anointing Jesus’ feet with oil. Perhaps Mary sacrificed a lot of m________ to buy that sweet-smelling oil. An ‘oil’ that is even more precious and pleasant is “consecration; charity; gentleness; ___________; and ___________ __________.” SH 592: 25.

Matthew 3 tells about John the Baptist who was the same age as Jesus. John baptized the people who believed him by helping them dip themselves into the river, just as Naaman had done as a symbol of his purified motives and thought. SH 561: 32-3. John knew that Jesus would give baptism the more spiritual meaning of purifying thought.
Before beginning his career as a teacher and healer, Jesus went to John to be baptized. John objected because Jesus was already pure in thought and deed, but Jesus insisted. Perhaps Jesus wanted to honor this outward symbol of a person’s commitment to purity of thought and deed. Jesus took this outward symbol to a spiritual level of inward commitment to God-likeness. Jesus’ message was, ‘know that you are the image and likeness of God and act like it. This is the highest proof of your devotion (consecration) to your Father-Mother God.’

Today we talked about baptism and sacrament. If you were going to take a photograph of either one, what would the photo show?
What is the important spiritual meaning of each word?
