Unreality

Unreality 10-4-09 Sara Lincoln

Christians and Christian Scientists consider God to be the most real thing there is, Reality itself. Twice a year, our Bible Lesson teaches us more about Reality. Since reality is THE real and only thing, why do we have a Bible Lesson about Unreality?........
Truth = Reality; Error = Unreality
What is the Christian Science definition of ‘error’ in the dictionary?______________
Does God create error? ________ Do humans create error? ________

For answers, we go not only to the dictionary, but also to our textbook. Science and Health says that error is an __________, meaning it has no real existence. 287: 22
“…evil and matter are ________ _______, and error has _____ _______.” SH 277: 7-10
Can you imagine something that doesn’t exist? _____ Do other people also do this?

Someone checking your homework might say, ‘you made an error.’ Another way of saying that would be, ‘you made a m__________.’ Is this ‘error’ an ‘evil’? _____
According to Webster’s, evil is not a mistake; evil is wrong and bad and causes suffering. For example, it is error, mistake, to say that God causes human suffering.
It is evil, wrong, to keep saying this after learning that God, Good, causes only good.
Where do we learn that God causes only good? ____________________________
Religious leaders in Jesus’ time saw his proofs that God, Good, causes only good, and yet they continued to insist that evil is real. Do people in our time believe that evil is real? __

Because we reflect God, it is natural to receive from God everything we need, for example, strength, intelligence, compassion, and the courage to ________________.
In order to receive good from God, we may have to refuse the counterfeit, the deception, the belief that we are separate from God and limited. The Apostle Peter put it this way: “________ yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may _______you in due time: casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” I Peter 5: 6-7.
How do you know God cares for you? ………..

To feel ‘the mighty hand of God’ lifting us up, perhaps we need a truer view of anything ‘pulling us down.’ I’m glad to have Christian Science which shows me this true view.
“We learn in Christian Science that all inharmony of mortal mind or body is ________, possessing neither reality nor identity though seeming to be real and identical.” SH 472: 30

Mary Baker Eddy gives us a word-picture of a baby chick coming out of its shell.
SH 552: 16-19. In line 17, who is ‘they’? ______
We ‘peck open our shells with Christian Science’ when we do what? ……………….

Who provides your food and clothes? ________ Yes, your p________, but not m_______. We need to remember that ‘________ provides all we need, tenderly expressing the _______________ and _________________of God.’ SH 507: 3-6.

Can you find the Beatitudes? In ____________ 5: 1-12, Jesus is teaching us the thoughts and actions that make us useful, happy, and satisfied, for example………….
Jesus blesses those people who ‘grieve,’ who are sorry for their mistakes, and those people who are h _________ and willing to o________.
Who do you look up to as an example of honesty and right thinking? ________________

The Gospel of Mark tells how Jesus came preaching and saying, “…_______ ___, and believe the gospel.” Mark 1: 15. To ‘repent’ means to be sorry for insisting on mistaken beliefs. To ‘repent’ means to change your thinking. Do you ever repent? ___

We have mentioned three important ideas: be humble, obey, and repent.
These attitudes and actions help us discover who we are. Who are we? ……….

Mark 3: 1-5 tells about Jesus healing a man with a withered (useless) ________. Religious leaders were watching but not rejoicing. They just wanted to accuse Jesus of breaking one of Moses’ Commandments because Jesus ‘healed’ (worked) on the __________ day. These religious leaders refused to repent, to change their thinking. Jesus was ‘grieved’ for the ‘hardness of their hearts’ but he went ahead and did what God wanted. Jesus ________ the man. These religious leaders believed an error, the mistaken thinking that God causes suffering. Because they were not willing to question their thinking and change their thinking, they let error sink into evil which is wrong, bad and causes or allows suffering. What did Jesus know that enabled him to prove that error//evil is unreal, powerless? _____

With his eyes, Jesus saw suffering and sin, but with his vision he saw wholeness.
Do you trust eyes or vision? _______

The words of Jesus are like the message of Christian Science: “Correct material belief by ____________ _____________, and Spirit will form you anew.” SH 425: 24-26.

Unreality is m___________ b__________. Reality is s__________ u____________.

Reality

Reality 9-27-09 Sara Lincoln

The Psalmist said to God, “Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.” Ps. 119: 18. I expect students of theology and physics have expressed the same sincere desire. Does God ‘open their eyes’? ___ And yet these seekers still view matter as part of God’s law. Is matter part of God’s law? ____, because ‘law’ deals with unchanging facts, whereas ‘matter’ is always changing. As our textbook on Science tells us, ‘…matter is the f_________, not the f_______, of existence.” SH 127: 16-22
“There is __________ in Spirit out of which _________ could be made…” SH 335: 8

Which lines in the Lord’s Prayer (SH 16-17) show that Jesus did not regard matter as the real thing…reality.

And right away, you are probably thinking of the Commandments God gave to Moses about choosing ‘reality’ over ‘matter.’ Which Commandment says it best?

Two prophets in the Old Testament wrote long books. That’s one reason they are called Major Prophets. Who are they? _________ and ___________. One of there prophets speaks to us in our Responsive Reading from the Christian Science Quarterly.
He says, “And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me
______ ____ _______ _______.” That prophet is _________________ (29: 13).

Do you think Moses wanted to experience God as the only Reality? ____ Moses was raised in a palace as an Egyptian prince. Egypt was a pagan country; people believed in many gods. But Moses’ mother had taught him well about the one God so he was a faithful Hebrew living as an Egyptian. Because Moses was seeking a fuller understanding of God, “…the Lord appeared unto him in a flame of fire.”
What was burning? ________Let’s read that account. Ex. 3: 1-5
What did God want Moses to do? Ex. 3: 10…….. Did Moses obey God? ______

To accomplish his task, Moses needed to be sure that God, Spirit, was the only power, even the present reality. Perhaps he prayed using words like these:
“Nothing is real and eternal, -- nothing is Spirit, -- but God and His idea.”
SH 71: 1-2
Let’s make this into a positive statement. Instead of beginning with ‘Nothing,’ we’ll begin with ‘Everything.’ How would you say it?

Here’s one way to say it:
Everything real is of Spirit; Mother -- Father God is All-in-all and I am Her idea.

Moses was a great deliverer. Elijah was a great prophet. There are many stories about Elijah in I Kings. Elijah proved to the priests that there is only one God, and Baal is not his name! Queen Jezebel worshipped Baal, so she tried to kill Elijah for insulting Baal. Would you be frightened if someone were trying to kill you? ____Elijah was frightened. He ran away and hid in a cave. The Lord was with him and said, “What doest thou here, Elijah? “ I Kings 19: 9.
Or we might describe it this way: Elijah knew he was cared for by God so he asked himself, ‘What am I doing here? Why am I hiding?’ What did Mind tell Elijah to do and what did Elijah learn? I Kings 19: 11-12

Perhaps Elijah spoke words like these from Science and Health: “Spiritual facts are not inverted; the opposite __________, which bears no resemblance to spirituality,
is _____ _______.” SH 207: 30-31

In the Glossary of Science and Health, Mary Baker Eddy gives us helpful definitions of things we need to understand as we get to know God and man. What familiar words do you see in the definition of Elijah (Elias)? P__________; C_________ S__________.
True Prophets (like Elijah and Christian Science) focus on s___________ f_________ and deny m___________ s__________.

To increase our understanding, we look up words in the dictionary. Recently we found something that may have surprised you. Webster’s definitions of ‘substance’ and ‘matter’ include the Christian Science definitions. ‘Substance’ is ______. ‘Matter’ is __________.
Perhaps the editors of the dictionary realized the importance of including the spiritual sense of an idea, not just the human sense. I’m glad the Discoverer of Christian Science, _____________________, knew to give us a book with definitions of essential words.

Moses gave the Children of Israel, including us, a spiritual interpretation of ‘law.’
Mary Baker Eddy gave us a spiritual interpretation of reality. ‘Reality,’ like ‘law,’simply IS. No human opinion can change reality or law.

In his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus didn’t just say to the people, ‘do better.’ Jesus said ‘____ ________.’ Matt. 5: 48. Jesus was able to heal because he did what he said. He saw the _________ _______. SH 476: 32-4

One time, the disciples saw Jesus talking to Moses (who was born about 1200 years before Jesus) and Elijah (who was born about 600 years before Jesus). Mark 9: 2-9.
This was possible because man is i_____ and has no a_____, no d________.
Like Jesus, we are agreeing only with i______________ c_______________.
SH 279: 11-12.
In this consciousness, ideas can be touched; they are t_________ and r__________.
The spiritual facts of being, Reality, appear as we divest (get rid of) f_______ t________ and m___________ e_____________. SH 428: 8-14. By doing this, we “sweep away the _______ and give place to the ________.”

Substance

Dear 7th graders, Welcome to your new class. Let’s do a short ‘getting to know you’ exercise then we’ll see if we can learn anything new about Substance, the subject of this week’s Bible Lesson.

Substance 9-13-09 Sara Lincoln

Perhaps you do not often use the word ’substance’ in conversation, but what you think it means shows up in your life every day. What are some words that explain the meaning of ‘substance’?

What does the dictionary say?
Doe the dictionary give the Christian Science definition? _____

Here’s another way to open up the meaning of this word Substance in your daily life.
Ask yourself, “What do I hope for and want?” Quickly now, before you think much about it, write down what you hope for and want:

Do you collect things, like sea shells or baseball cards? People like what they collect; they treasure their collection. The US Government collects money in the form of taxes and puts that money in the US Treasury. Most adults also collect money. What do they do with it?

Where is ‘the Sermon on the Mount’? ___________ In that collection of teachings, Jesus talked about treasures. In Matt. 6: 20-21, he said we should lay up (put) our treasures in ____________. Why?
What you ‘treasure’ is what you love with your heart, your thought.

There are material riches and heavenly riches. What’s the difference? ……..
Jesus gave some good guidance. He said, seek ye the __________ ___ ________ (heavenly riches) and all these things (material riches) shall be added unto you. Luke 12: 31
And don’t worry, he said. “It is your Father’s good pleasure to give you ___ _________”
Luke 13: 32. God loves us so much that He gives us every thought and idea and thing we need, and God helps us want what He gives!

I’m thinking of a time when Jesus was talking to thousands of people outside of town. The people were hungry for the love of God that Jesus was talking about. When the people got hungry for food, what did Jesus do? Matt. 14: 17-21.
Is this Bible story about ‘substance’? ____ What kind of substance?

Is this table ‘substance’? _____ Are tables necessary here, at home, in school? _____ Christian Science explains that a table is not m_________ but is m________________.
See the Scientific Statement of Being, page _________. See line 9-11. How would you explain the difference between ‘matter’ and ‘manifestation’?
I am _______________ but I am not ____________.

God gives us what we need. Here’s how it works: God gives the idea. We accept the idea. The idea appears to human consciousness as a thing or an act.

What do you give to God? ………..
Some Christians (and others) give 10% of their income (their riches) to the church. If I give 10% of my substance (my riches or wealth) to the church, is that enough? ______

One time a ruler asked Jesus, ‘what shall I do to inherit eternal life?’ Maybe he wanted to have a good life here and a continuing life instead of death.
What would you tell the ruler to do?...................
Jesus said, ‘keep the Commandments.’ The ruler said, ‘I do that already.’ Well then, Jesus said, the next thing you need to do is ‘sell everything you have and give the money to the poor. Have treasure in heaven. Come follow me.’ Luke 18: 18-24
Did Jesus want the man to be poor? ______Jesus wanted the man to desire and accept heavenly r________ first so that he could then have human r_______ to share with others.

The Scientific Statement of Being says ‘man is not material; he is spiritual.’
Could we also say, s_________ is not material; s__________ is spiritual?

Man

Man 9-6-09 Sara Lincoln

Does God love you?___ How do you know? Do you love you? ____ Why?

“Who do you think you are, anyway?” You might have heard this negative reaction to your self-expression. Does self-expression include ‘showing off’?____ Your first response to this question needs to be thought, not words. In thought you might ask yourself, “am I feeling or acting superior to others? Putting myself ahead of others in importance?” It takes honesty and humility to ask and answer such questions, but you need to move on from question to answer. Is your Parent Mind always showing you how to be and do? ___ You are learning through Christian Science how to be real Christians, actual followers of Christ Jesus. The Bible and Science and Health are teaching you to quickly take a spiritual direction in thought, and that is to remember who you really are. Who are you, according to God? Who are you really, according to spiritual sense? There’s a hint on page 468 of SH.

Did people ask Jesus “who do you think you are, anyway?” ____ Religious leaders criticized Jesus for doing things they couldn’t do and didn’t understand. People were afraid and jealous too. They could have said, ‘teach us more.’ Instead they said, ‘this is not what we have always believed so how could it be true???’

Did people criticize Mary Baker Eddy by asking, “Who do you think you are, anyway?”_
Most people had a conviction that ‘man’ is material and mortal, that man is a victim of sin, disease, and death, and no one can be sure whether God will help out or not! Because Mrs. Eddy greatly desired to know the truth about God and man, God-Mind revealed it to her. Because she loved mankind, she wrote a book describing how anyone can ‘know the truth’ and how ‘the truth will make free’ as Jesus promised.
Mrs. Eddy makes many statements about ‘man’ as did many Bible writers.
What did the Prophet Isaiah say? Isa. 43: 5, 21
What did the Prophet Jeremiah say? Jer. 31: 3
What did the Apostle Paul say? Rom. 8: 16
What did Christ Jesus say? Matt. 5: 48
What did Mary Baker Eddy say in the definition of man? SH 475. Let’s find some phrases that are strong statements of truth about man (like the ones Christ Jesus made):

The definition says ‘you include all right ideas,’ but it also says ‘you possess no life, intelligence, nor creative power of your own.’ Is there a contradiction? Or did I miss something?
Christian Science explains: ‘man r__________ spiritually all that belongs to his Maker.’

Would you like to have “enlarged individuality, a wider sphere of thought and action, a more expansive love, a higher and more permanent peace”? You find these through a s____________ s_________ of b___________. SH 265: 10. ‘Scientific’ means _______

According to our textbook, that man is blessed ‘who seeth his brother’s _______ and ______________ it, seeking his own in another’s good.’ SH 518: 17-19
When did you ever see another person’s need and supply it?..........

Maybe you know the names of some other Christian religions, for example, P________________, M____________, E________________, B_____________.
These religious sects believe that God became flesh, in the form of Jesus. Do Christian Scientists believe this? ____ In the Bible, John says ‘the Word was made flesh.’
John 1: 1, 14. This means the Word of God corrects and heals the flesh. The Word heals the human mind which believes in flesh. The Word speaks to man’s thought and body.
Science and Health warns us not to ‘war’ over the corporeality of Jesus….not to fight over the nature of Jesus, but to rejoice “in the _____________ of our God.”
‘Affluence’ means __________________________________________.
Maybe we could say Jesus was a m_________ who taught us the truth about M______.
Can you be the same? Can you be a m______ or w________ who knows and lives the truth about M_________?
