Christ Jesus 8-30-09 Sara Lincoln
Hundreds of years before Jesus was born, the prophet Isaiah said it would happen. He said, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: “ Isa. 9: 6. Not ‘shall be’ in the future, but ‘will be,’
is now.
And what will ‘this child, this son’ be like?
Isaiah said this son will not be influenced by what the material senses say. Isaiah lists eight values that this son will be influenced by: wisdom and good advice and right purpose and spiritual dominion and knowledge and respect for God and quick understanding. and righteousness (right thinking). This son’s authority (government) will keep expanding and there will be no limits to the wholeness he brings to all mankind.
Did Isaiah’s prophecy come true? ____ Did a man like this come to earth? ____
Are there people like this on earth today? ______
In our world, is evil expanding and threatening all mankind, or is the authority (government) of Good expanding and blessing everyone with wholeness and safety?
You have to choose you know, decide which of these two questions is the one you will seek answers to and evidence of.
Are you willing to see Good expanding or do you agree with mortal mind that says evil is expanding?... ’Mortal mind’ is the supposed ‘mind’ that hated Jesus, and hates the Christ.
Put a circle around the values you are influenced by.
Mary Baker Eddy points out that “Jesus was the offspring of Mary’s self-conscious communion with God.” SH 29: 32. What are the negative and positive (or you could say the material and spiritual) meanings of ‘self-conscious’?
Jesus healed a paralyzed man when he said: “Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee.” Matt. 9: 2. The scribes said it was blasphemy (serious disrespect to God) to say and do things that only God could say and do, so Jesus stated plainly, “the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins” and heal the sick. Matt. 9: 6. Jesus was the Son of God, so why did he call himself the Son of man?...........
Who else is the son of man? ……..
Sin is only the belief in a power opposed to God. You have the ability to forgive (remove) sins and heal the sick when you remember the metaphor of the mirror.
What you see in the mirror is you, and yet not you. It is r______________.
Mind looks at its creation just as you look in the mirror. What Mind sees in the mirror is a reflection called you, doing the works of Mind, of God, just as Jesus commanded.
See Matt. 17: 1-8. Special things happen to people who think and live close to God. Last week we noticed that Elijah was ‘translated’: he left the earth without dying. This week we read that Christ Jesus was ‘transfigured.’ His face ____________; his raiment (robe) ____________. He was having a conversation with _________ and _________ who lived hundreds of years before Jesus. Peter wanted to honor and celebrate the occasion by building three tabernacles. What is a tabernacle?
When the Children of Israel were crossing the wilderness on their way to the Promised Land of Canaan, Moses built a tabernacle, a big wooden structure, to protect the Ark of the Covenant which contained the ________________. Ex. 25, 26, 40.
But God was not interested in a big memorial for Jesus. What did God want the disciples to do? …….…“A bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.”
Listen to him.
Then Jesus did something which showed how he valued unselfishness and thoughtfulness. He knew that hearing God’s voice might have frightened his disciples, so he quickly said, “Arise, and be not afraid.”
Science and Health says that Jesus showed more than human power in what he said and did. SH 539: 27-30. When do you have more than human power? …………….
Jesus is not here today but S_________ is. If something is a Science it means anyone can learn it and prove it. Jesus reversed “the evidence before the corporeal human senses.” SH 116: 5. You can do the same when you know and apply the s________ s_________ of b_______ which says that you are, man is ………..
Did Jesus establish a church? ____ SH 136: 1-2.
What is the foundation of the church Jesus established? ________________
After only three years of teaching, preaching, and healing, Jesus was accused of blasphemy and of stirring up the people. The Pharisees insisted that Jesus be crucified, like a criminal, and the Romans carried out the deed. But after only three days in the tomb, Jesus walked out. His friend, Mary Magdalene, was surprised to find the tomb empty, and even more surprised that Jesus was right there, talking to her. He told her to “go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.” John 20: 11-17
Does this mean that you have the same Father that Jesus had? ______
Jesus said and did many things that are written in the Bible.
What do you think was the most important thing Jesus said? …….
What do you think was the most important thing Jesus did?..........
To me, it was “the proof of his final triumph over body and matter.” SH 42: 15-18
Jesus told his disciples to continue the work of teaching, preaching, and healing, then he rose up into heaven; he ascended. And the disciples did go forth, preaching, “and confirming the word with signs following.” Mark 16: 19-20
Thanks to Christian Science, thousands of new disciples are confirming Jesus’ preaching and healing. When can you be a disciple who witnesses to the spiritual sense of being, as Jesus did? __________
Authority is now in the eight values mentioned at the top of page 1. How will these values apply to your new school year, your new teachers and friends and assignments?
