God

God 7-5-09 Sara Lincoln

The Psalmist said, “The Lord gave the word: great was the company of those that published it.” Ps. 68: 11
This verse is engraved in stone on The Christian Science Publishing House which publishes Christian Science periodicals in Boston. Can you name them?
The M_____________, The CS J___________, The CSS____________,
The CS Q____________.
‘To publish’ means to ___________.

The Apostle Paul said it this way: “For ___him, and ___________ him, and _____him, are all things: to whom be ______ ______ ______. Amen. Rom. 11: 36

Abraham was the first person we know of who realized that the many statue gods all around him could not really do anything. They could not do harm. They could not do good. He told his followers that God could not be confined in matter, but did live in the heart of man. Is the heart of man made of matter? _________

There is a ‘Question and Answer’ about God in the chapter of Science and Health that is all questions and answers. What chapter is that? ______________
The first Question is “What is God?” The Answer is…………SH 465
If someone asks you, “Who is God?” What will you answer? __________

When many Christians say the Lord’s Prayer, they say, “Our Father who art in heaven.” Is that what Jesus said? _____Matt. 6: 9 Is that what Christian Scientists say? ______
Where in our textbook is the Lord’s Prayer and its spiritual interpretation? __________

Mary Baker Eddy gave mankind seven ways to get to know God and God’s creation.
The seven s_____________ are: Mi_______, Sp________, So________, Pr__________, Li________, Tr________, and Lo________. Each of these synonyms is the focus of one section of our Bible Lesson this week.

Section I Mind
Ps. 139: 17 “Precious” means _______________________________
SH 520: 3 only: “Unfathomable” means __________________________

e.g., the principle of mathematics, it has strict rules, but it also has no limitation.

Section V Life
John 11: 1-3, 17, 41-44 Jesus called Lazarus to come out of the _______where he had been for four days. Was Lazarus dead while he was in the tomb? ______

“Love giveth to the least spiritual idea _______, __________, and goodness, which shine through all…” SH 518: 19-23. Another word for ‘a varied expression of God’ would be an i______________ expression of God.
Every individual expresses the h_________, h__________, and i____________ of God, of infinite Life, Truth, and Love. SH 518: 21.

Do you know of a situation that is not completely harmonious?
Which synonym for God will help you see harmony instead of discord? ___________

Christian Science

Christian Science 6-28-09 Sara Lincoln

A sacrament is a religious act that can be a symbol of spiritual sense. Bowing your head when you pray in Sunday School is a sacrament. Declaring the Scientific Statement of Being is a sacrament. Christian Scientists ‘observe the sacrament.’

Christian Science is ‘Christian’ because…….
Which tenets indicate that we are ‘Christian’? ________

Some people have not read a Christian Science Bible Lesson or Science and Health and yet they are ‘sure’ we are not Christian because of our view of Jesus. We believe that Jesus was the highest human manifestation of manhood, SH 482: 19-20,
and that Christ is the divine idea, SH 473: 15.
Many other religions, however, Protestant and Catholic, teach that ‘Jesus is God.’
Did Jesus ever say he was God? ____Jesus said, “I and my Father are one,” John 10: 30. He also said, “my Father is greater than I.” John 14: 28
Jesus called himself “the Son of ______” and also “the Son of ______.”
Matt. 16: 13-18

Did you ever wonder, ‘why did this false teaching that Jesus is God arise?’ Because, if Jesus is God, only he could heal sin, disease, and death and his followers (Christians) would not feel called to take his command literally, to heal the sick and cast out demons.
Mark 16: 17-18 says………..
Matt. 10: 5-8 this is the logo of Christian Science……
Luke 9: 2 says……….
Luke 10: 9 says ……..

True Christians do not reject Jesus’ command that we should heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Healing the sick is a sacrament, a symbol of spiritual consciousness.
True Christians accept the Christ consciousness that Jesus accepted. Christian Science is the one religion that helps a person find and accept the Christ consciousness, Christian healing. Above the human and limited sense of being is the ‘scientific’ perception that “All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation.” SH 468

What is another way of saying ‘celestial being’? ______________
Our textbook says that Jesus’ mission “was to reveal the _________ ____celestial being. SH 26: 16. A ‘science’ can be learned and demonstrated by anyone.

Mathematics is a science; astronomy is a science; environmental protection is a science; food preparation is a science. A subject area, even spiritual healing, can be a science if someone can learn the rules and apply them, demonstrate them.

Mary Baker Eddy surprised the theologians of her day (the late 1800s) when she discovered and proved that Christianity is a S__________, not a small ‘s’ science, but capital S, Science. Why capital S? ________
“In the year 1866, I discovered the ________ ________ or divine laws of Life, Truth, and Love, and named my discovery __________ __________.” SH 107: 1-8
“__________ is an emanation of divine Mind, and is alone able to interpret God aright.” SH 127: 26

The books of the Bible were written over a period of about 1150 years, from c.1000 B.C. to c.150 A.D. .
Did the authors of these 66 books in the Bible know about “Christian Science’? ____
Explain why you say ‘no.’ Explain why you say ‘yes.’

Here are some places in the Old and New Testament that describe a relationship in which God empowers man to know Him, to be blessed, to bless and heal others.
Gen. 1: 26-28
Isa. 45: 11-13 to :
Habakkuk 2: 14
Ps. 103: 1-5
John 14: 12-13 Behold what a person can do who believes Jesus!
II Tim. 3: 14, 15, 17

What is a ‘revelation’? …………….. Did you ever have one? _____________
In his later years, the Apostle John was on an island called Patmos. John was praying for the Christian churches which were being persecuted by Rome, a pagan city that worshipped many gods. John received a revelation: Rev. 1: 1, 3; Rev. 12: 1, 5, 10.
Science and Health explains what John saw: SH 561: 16-25…………………..
John saw Jesus “as__________ _________ ________ in Life and its demonstration.”

Almost 2000 years after John, Mary Baker Eddy received a revelation: Christian healing.
Who can learn and practice Christian healing? ___________________SH 271: 26-30

Mary Baker Eddy explains what a Christian Scientist does. SH 367: 17
She quotes three metaphors Jesus used. A Christian Scientist can be “the ______ of the earth,” “the _______ of the world,” and like a city which “cannot ____ ______.”
She tells what she hopes the reader of Science and Health will learn: SH 253: 9-14
“your _______ ______, your ________-________harmony, your freedom from the ________ __ sin, disease, or death.

She hopes, we hope, for “that happy day, when man shall recognize the Science of Christ and love his neighbor as himself… SH 55: 15-21
There is that word ’Science” again. What is “the Science of Christ?” SH 55: 18
Every one can learn and practice Christian healing. You too? _________

Do Christian Scientists ‘observe the sacrament’? Oh yes, as sincere followers of Christ Jesus, we learn and use spiritual sense.

Is the Universe, Including Man, Evolved by Atomic Force?

Is the Universe, Including Man, Evolved by Atomic Force? 6-21-09 Sara Lincoln

If the answer is ‘yes,’ the universe and man did evolve from atomic force,’ then why didn’t Jesus say so? Why didn’t Paul and John and the earlier prophets say so? Even most ‘physical universe scientists’ concede that a non-material creative power was the original cause. God says, “…Ask me of things to come concerning my sons, and concerning the work of my hands command ye me.” Isa. 45: 11

According to Christian Science, the most comprehensive science, the answer is ‘no, the universe and man did not evolve by atomic force,’ because Creator-Spirit could not // would not produce what is unlike itself. Nature illustrates that ‘like produces like.’
Trees do not produce dimes and nickels; rose bushes do not produce oranges.

Thousands of years ago, a man named Job set his heart and mind on finding God. The Lord, always alert to the searching heart, showed his respect for Job by conversing with him, pointing out that only Creator//Spirit could ‘lay the foundations of the earth’ and put wisdom and understanding in the heart. Job 38: 4, 6, 36
Job wisely acknowledged that the Lord knows and does all, thus enabling Job to know God from first hand experience. Before this conversation, Job knew only what others had told him. Job 42: 1, 2, 5

Like Job, many Psalmists proclaimed the omni______, omni_______, and omni_______ of God. ‘Omni’ means _________.Ps. 104: 24, 30, 31
The Psalmists also knew that people are blessed when they walk // live ___ ___ ______ of God. Ps. 89: 15. Does ‘light’ mean ‘knowledge’? ______

You know many things about Christian Science. Do you know first hand, from direct conversation with God, or do you just know what you have heard others say? _____
To have ‘knowledge’ is to have correct information about some subject, but to have ‘wisdom’ is to know __________________

The Psalmist said, “All thy works shall praise thee, O Lord; and ____ _______ shall bless thee.” Ps. 145: 10. What are ‘saints’? _______________________________
Science and Health 295: 6-8 might be telling us that ‘saints’ are _________ ______ which of course are __________ to the Mind that makes them.
Do you like the sound of it: Saint Elena, Saint Jacob? How will you live up to that title?

What and where is the Kingdom of Heaven? SH 590: 1 and Luke 17: 20-21 _________
Is it “the atmosphere of Spirit” within you? _______
If weather in the world at any moment expresses ‘atomic force,’ there can be tornados and what else ? __________________
I thank God that I can know at every moment that ‘intelligence holds the winds in its grasp.’ SH 209: 10
Is there weather in the Kingdom of Heaven? __________

Because all mankind has access to the most advanced Science, mankind can know that Mind, Intelligence, governs the ___________, including ________, in perfect harmony. SH 510: 28-1. Is this fact ‘true’ whether you know it or not? ______ In order to directly experience the facts of harmony (as Job experienced the facts of God’s being) what do you need to do? ………………………
And beyond that, our textbook tells us we must ‘translate man and the universe back into Spirit.’ SH 209: 16-24. How do we do that? …………….
We also refuse to let material sense do the opposite. The material senses try to translate spiritual ideas into material beliefs. The material senses try to make an anthropomorphic god out of infinite Principle! That would be like trying to make the number 4 act like a 3.

What is the difference between a fountain and a cistern? ………..
For a new and fresh idea, would you go to a fountain or a cistern?
The Lord told Jeremiah, …”my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the _______________ of many waters, and hewed them out ____________, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.” Jer. 2: 5, 13

About 3,000 years ago, no rain fell for three years in Samaria and King Ahab was desperate. Elijah told Ahab why: you and your family and the people are worshipping Baal instead of God. Elijah defeated the prophets of Baal in a contest, I Kings 18, then he told Ahab to get ready for a big rain. Soon “the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain” (verse 45). Did Elijah perform a miracle? ____ Elijah did not try to get God to change His plan. Elijah (the man with dominion) proved “…the Science of God’s unchanging law” – of good. SH 135: 6-8. Could you do the same? ________

What will happen as material knowledge diminishes and spiritual understanding increases? SH 96: 27. We will see things m____________ instead of m____________.

Not enough water results in a __________. Too much water results in a _________.
A storm on the lake was filling the disciples’ boat with water, but Jesus was taking a quiet nap ‘in the hinder part of the ship…’ Did Jesus ignore the storm? ______
Did he tell the disciples ‘don’t worry’? _____ What did he do? …………Mark 4: 35-40

The Psalmist knew that the Lord “bringeth the wind out of his treasuries.” Ps. 135: 7
What a gift to the world that we too can ‘know the truth’ about wind, rain, cold, heat, and all extreme weather. Weather is a manifestation of Mind and cannot cause destruction. Furthermore, the angry and frightened beliefs of mortalnomind cannot invade ‘the atmosphere of Spirit’ which is the Kingdom of Heaven which is where we live. Sometimes we sing hymn 144 “In atmosphere of Love divine, we live, and move, and breathe;” What is the next line? …………………..

I think the universe, including man, is evolved by……………………

God the Preserver of Man

God the Preserver of Man 6-14-09 Sara Lincoln

What is a ‘life preserver’ and how is it used? ________
The human mind seems to experience the ‘deep waters’ of danger, fear, what else? ___
When you are uncertain or afraid or upset or angry, how can you get out of these dangerous waters of human belief, of belief in matter? _____
To get out and stay out of the human mind’s beliefs in limitation, we need to ‘acknowledge’ {remember? ‘know and accept’} that Life is God, unlimited good.
To acknowledge another life, which is limited and sometimes full of danger and evil,
is to believe in more than one God, which we don’t want to do!

What useful information does Christian Science give us about “the human mind” and
“the divine Mind”? SH 151: 23-26

I like the way one Psalmist talks to God and shows her trust. She says: O Lord, you know everything about me! You know my hopes and plans, and even my fears. You are always leading me, correcting me, protecting me. I will remember to thank you every day. Ps. 139: 1-5, 7-11 and Ps. 54: 6, 7.

Another Psalmist also gives us words for expressing trust in God. In Ps. 121: 1-8,
he says the Lord helps you and helps me. I will read the Psalm, showing that God is your help, your keeper//protector, your ‘life preserver.’ {Thy means your. Thee means you.}
Now you read the Psalm showing that God helps me: my help, my keeper, my preserver.

Jesus knew the Old Testament. He knew the Psalms. Do you think maybe he said this Psalm of trust when he prayed? _____
Would this be a Psalm of trust and gratitude for any Christian and every Christian Scientist?

How many Psalms are there? _____ Sometimes the Psalmist complained, told the Lord about his troubles. Sometimes the Psalmist made a request, asked for something.
In Psalm 121, is there a complaint or a request? ¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬_____

Christian Science shows us how to be very close to God, to trust God as parent and friend, as protector and provider. Science and Health shows us that we learn _____ ___ _____ to trust God and know God as a “present help in trouble.” SH 444: 10
The first step is to remember what the Scriptures imply: ____ ___ ___-___-____.
331: 11. ‘Scriptures’ means the books of the __________.

After Jesus ascended, who did God send to tell the Jews and the Gentiles about Jesus? “_______, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle…” Rom. 1: 1
Great crowds came to hear Paul tell about Jesus’ works and resurrection. Mortalnomind, always misinterpreting Jesus’ works and resurrection, got hold of a group called‘the _______’ who were ‘filled with envy.’ Acts 13: 45.
What did these religious leaders do? Acts 13: 50. _______________________________
Paul and Barnabas did not forget for a moment that God is the preserver of man.
What did these faithful servants do? ______________________________Acts 13:51-52.
Not only ‘the Jews’ but also ‘the Romans’ tried to interfere with Paul’s teaching and healing work. ‘The Romans’ (an occupying army in Jerusalem) beat Paul and Silas and put them ___ ________. They did not forget for a moment that God is the preserver of man. What happened when they sang praises to God in prison?
Acts 16: 23-26.
Did you read the whole story, Acts 16: 16-40?

Later in the book of Acts we have the story of Paul when he was a prisoner on a ship that was breaking up because of a storm. What did Paul say to the people on the ship? Acts 27: 22-25. Paul did not forget for a moment that God is the preserver of man. Everyone on the ship “escaped all safe to land.” Acts 27: 44.

About two thousand years after Paul, another faithful follower of Christ Jesus wrote a book that explains how all of us can ‘bless the human family,’ SH 234: 4. The author of this book, _____ _____ _____, gives what warning and encouragement to the followers of Christ: SH 5: 15-18? ______________-
Mortalnomind tries to kill but God strengthens and preserves!
Only Truth (God) can destroy error (mortalnomind) so all of us Christians and Christian Scientists “wait on God” then we do what? _______ _______ SH 323: 9

Christian Science shows what we can do when we are falsely accused, unjustly sentenced. “It is man’s moral right ____ _______ an unjust sentence…” SH 381: 28.
’To annul’ means to ____________________

Man is safe and saved because “nothing can interfere with the ________ __ _______ nor end the existence of man in Science.” SH 427: 14-16
Because God is the preserver of man, “…we know that all things _______ ________ ____ ______” to them that love God….” Rom. 8: 28

How many times does this lesson say ‘God is the preserver of man’? _______
Do you agree that Life, Truth, and Love preserve man forever? _____
Tell us about a time God preserved you, protected you. ________

God the Only Cause and Creator

God the Only Cause and Creator 6-7-09 Sara Lincoln

Why does ‘good’ come into your experience? ___
Aren’t you sometimes the cause or source of the good in your life? ___

The prophets in the Bible, as we know, looked and listened for God’s perspective on everything. Two and a half centuries ago, Isaiah practiced the science of prophecy and wrote down his inspiration. He confidently gave God’s messages to the Jews. In Isaiah 45: 5, 6, 11, 12, Isaiah quotes many “I” statements that God made to the Jews.
How would you summarize these six “I” statements from God?..........

The Pastor of this Christian Science church, of all Christian Science churches, is _____________ and _____________.
In the Preface to our textbook, Mary Baker Eddy says, “The ______ _____ __________ has come.” SH vii: 13 only
How would you define ‘thinking’? ……….Are you a thinker? ____ How do you know?
Some kinds of thinking are: knowing, remembering, _________, ________, _________

Is it ‘thinking’ when you just repeat / obey the words of those in authority? ______
Are we ‘thinking’ when we believe and apply the words from our Pastor? ________

Parents or teachers might say, ‘learn this, do this,’ and you ask ‘why,’ and they say ‘because I said so.’ Are they directing you to obey or to think?..........
What’s the difference? ……

God’s prophets might also say, ‘learn this, do this, because I said so.’ For example, the Psalmist said, “Know ye that the Lord ____ ____ ____: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves.” Ps. 100: 3. Are we being asked to think or obey? ____
And Christ Jesus said, “ ______ ___ ________ for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on.” Matt. 6: 25 But Jesus further explained, “for after all these things do ____ ________ seek: for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.” Matt. 6: 31, 32
‘The Gentiles’ referred to non-Jews, people of other nations who still acknowledged ‘other gods’ rather than monotheism, which means……………….
In Deut. 4: 39, Moses tells us to know and consider (take to heart) that the Lord he is God in _______________________________________

In the tenets in Science and Health (497), the word ‘acknowledge’ is used _____ times.
I acknowledge means I know//accept. Read the 4th tenet to us and say
‘I know//accept’ instead of ‘we acknowledge.’

In Matthew 7: 7, Christ Jesus used these words in directing his followers to acknowledge:
Ask and ___________________________________________
Seek and __________________________________________
Knock and _________________________________________

Science and Health says that “…creation consists of the unfolding of ________ ______ and their _________ …” SH 502: 29.
‘Spiritual idea and its identity’ is similar to ‘i____________ M_______ and its infinite manifestation.’ SH 468: 10-11

How important to your success and happiness is the first commandment of the Decalogue? Deca-logue means ten-commandments. (Ex. 20: 2, 3).
Say the First Commandment to us, substituting the word “Creator’ for the word ‘God’ and the word ‘creators’ for ‘gods.’

Say the First Commandment again, using these synonyms for God given to us in Christian Science: Mind, Truth, Life.
After you listened to these other ways of stating the First Commandment, did you have a stronger sense or conviction that God is All-in-all, the only cause and creator? ______

When a husband and wife have a baby, have they proved that ‘man’ is a creator? ______
I am glad that Christian Science explains it as follows: The baby is “the ___________ of some distant idea of Truth…” SH 263: 20-22.
If I think of myself as a discovery, I will continue to discover new things about myself!

As your identity unfolds and you make many discoveries about yourself, mortalnomind may suddenly react and insist that your progress is the result of your personal mind and personal talents. If you agree with mortalnomind, you will lose because ____________. If you disagree with mortalnomind, you will win because ________________________
God is the only cause and creator. Mortal mind is not a creator, not a creation.

“The starting point of _______ __________is that God, Spirit, is All-in-all, and that there is no other might nor Mind…” SH 275: 6. No other cause or creator.
Let’s find two other words that would fit in these blanks.

Jesus wanted his disciples and the people who followed him to understand who he was. Jesus knew he was “the Son of ______” and also “the Son of _______.” Matt. 16: 13-18.
When Jesus asked what others thought about him, what did he find out? Verse 14
Jesus was pleased with Peter’s answer, “Thou art _____ ________.” verse 16
Perhaps Jesus knew that God the only cause and creator would produce a spiritual idea (the Christ) which would then be manifested as Jesus. An idea is always manifested.
You also want to know who you are. Are you the Son of God and also the Son of Man?

We want to be ‘scientific’ as we seek a fuller understanding of God and man. To be ‘scientific’ is to be thoughtful, accurate, precise, persistent, and what else? __________
Jesus was the model of a scientific man because he did what? SH 313: 23-26

Here is a great summary of the truth about ‘cause.’ SH 207: 20-23. Let’s read it aloud.
