Christ Jesus

Christ Jesus 3-1-09 Sara Lincoln

‘Christ Jesus’: is this his first name and middle name?

The angel Gabriel told Mary she would “…bring forth a son, and …call his name Jesus” What did Gabriel say that the Lord God would give to this Son of the Highest?
Luke 1: 31-32

Mary and Joseph took the baby Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem “to present him to the Lord.” The Holy Ghost had told a man and a woman who served God in the temple that they would have the blessing of seeing “the Lord’s Christ.” What were the names of that man and that woman who saw that the baby Jesus would become the Christ?
Luke 2: 22, 25-26, 36-37

Our textbook says that “…Christ is not a name so much as the __________ _________ of Jesus.” SH 333: 3-15

How would you describe the distinction between the names ‘Christ’ and ‘Jesus’?

Christian Science helps us understand ‘Christ Jesus.’ How does it explain the special role of Christ and the special role of Jesus? SH 482: 16-23

Perhaps we could add another name that reveals his purpose and describes who he was: Christ Jesus M________. Why wouldn’t his last name be God?

One purpose of Christ Jesus was to teach us the true nature of ________ and ________.

According to the Apostle Paul, God gave two reasons why Jesus was given a higher position than other men. What were the two reasons? Heb. 1: 9

The people of Jesus’ day wondered who is this man who is teaching new things about God and healing the sick and the sinning? When Jesus was talking to his disciples about this, what did Jesus call himself? What did Peter call him?
Matt. 16: 13-16

Jesus was a Jew but he explained that his religion went beyond what Jews had believed for hundreds of years. What did Jesus explain that his religion had?
SH 136: 2-6

Jesus said that other people could do the healing works he did, but only if they did what? John 14: 6, 12

Jesus talked about his Father many times. One time he said, ‘I and my Father are one.’ John 10: 30. Did Jesus say he was God?
What was “the divinity of the man Jesus”? SH 26: 10-14

A ‘parable’ teaches an important lesson by telling a simple story that everyone will understand. What important lesson was Jesus teaching when he used the parable of the mustard seed? Matt. 13: 31-32

One time Jesus and his disciples were in a boat and a great storm came up on the lake. What do you think Jesus said to the storm when he rebuked it?
What effect did this have on the disciples when Jesus calmed the storm? Luke 8: 22-25

After the boat reached the other side of the lake, Jesus had a different kind of storm to deal with. Where was that storm and how did Jesus calm it? Luke 8: 26-33

Christ Jesus could heal because he refused to see people as sick or sinning or mentally disturbed. Jesus knew that verse in Genesis 1 that describes how God made man and what God gave to man and woman. What verse is it and what did God give to man?

It was Christ Jesus’ _____________ ________ ____ ________ that healed the sick. SH 477: 2-4

Jesus looked to Truth to see “the perfect man” governed by Truth and Love. Mary Baker Eddy uses three other words that mean ‘looked to Truth.’ What are those three words? SH 476: 32

Mind

Mind 2-22-09 Sara Lincoln

Can everyone have perfect peace (no worry) about everything in her-his life? ____
It’s true that God gives perfect peace, but if I am going to experience it, I have to first of all a___________ it. I need to focus on one God, one M_______ and refuse the suggestion of __________no_________ that there are many m__________.

Attention to the Ten C_____________ puts me in command. God says, ‘I am the Lord, your Mind. Do not believe in other minds.’ {Where in the Bible do you find the 10Cs}

God does everything perfectly through HisHer manifestation / reflection, which is y_______ and m________. What 8-word line in the Scientific Statement of Being says it all? “All is ___________ ________ and its ____________ _______________.” SH 468
The Prophet Isaiah speaks the words of God when he says “Bring my sons from far, and my daughters from the ends of the earth; this people have I formed for myself; they shall shew forth my praise.” Isa. 43: 6 bring, 21 God thinks and acts and I am the image in the mirror. I accept my dominion and my love for the divine Creator and divine creation. SH 516: 4-8

I sometimes make mistakes. Do you? _______ Who accuses you of making mistakes?
God, Mind, does not accuse you so you need to shut up and shut down the false accusation (testimony) of the c_____________ s____________ and remember the f_______ of S_________. SH 516: 4-8. How often do you need to do this? _______

Genesis 37 and 39 begin the story of a young man named Joseph. Joseph’s 11 brothers were jealous and they hated him because his father gave him a ____________ (37:3)
and because Joseph dreamed that his brothers would _______ _______ to him
(37: 9-10).
In that dream, God, Mind, was showing Joseph what would happen in the future.

Joseph’s brothers threw him into a deep pit. One of the brothers, Reuben, planned to come back and get him, but some traveling business men (merchant men from Midian) pulled Joseph out and sold him to another group of traders, the Ishmeelites, who sold him to an Egyptian named Potiphar (37:36). A couple of years later, Potiphar’s wife accused Joseph of adultery so Potiphar put Joseph in prison.
(39: 7, 12, 16-18, 20)

What happens to Joseph as a result of these happenings – being hated by his brothers, thrown into a pit, sold as a slave, then accused of adultery? (39: 21-23)
Does he let ‘mortal mind’ make him feel hated and helpless, like a victim? _____
Joseph holds on to his d__________ and thinks only the thoughts that M______ gives him. Joseph would not forget that God is in charge of man, Mind is in charge of mind.

Perhaps Mary Baker Eddy was remembering the story of Joseph when she wrote this statement about wisdom in SH 231: 20-25. Joseph was wise because he would not doubt God’s government; he would not distrust God’s care.

Pharaoh, King of Egypt, put Joseph in prison even though Joseph was innocent. Joseph kept on knowing his innocence as God’s son, and he refused to be guilty, helpless, or angry. Because he persisted in trusting one M______ and refusing many _______,
he was ready to help Pharaoh, to interpret Pharaoh’s dream. “…Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, it is not in me: God {Mind} shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace.” Gen. 41: 16. Joseph was very humble and very sure of God’s presence and guidance.

Joseph explained that there would be seven years of _______ ________ throughout the land of Egypt {and then} seven years of ________. Gen. 41: 29-30 Pharaoh believed in many gods (many minds) but he was wise enough to know that Joseph was even wiser because he trusted the one God, one M______. Pharaoh put Joseph in charge of distributing the food and no one starved during the famine.
Like Joseph, can you solve every problem that you hear about, even hunger and homelessness? _________ How? SH 215: 12

Joseph’s family, in the land of Canaan, was also experiencing the famine. Joseph’s 11 brothers came to Egypt to buy food. Joseph was an adult now and his brothers did not recognize him, but he knew them. Here was his opportunity to ‘get even’ but all his life Joseph had been rejecting the mortal mind view of things, so he was not tempted by revenge. Joseph accepted only divine Mind. This one Mind knows and expresses only abundance – abundance of forgiveness and abundance of supply (food).
Joseph gave his brothers plenty of food and later he invited them and his father Isaac to come live in Egypt, which they did. Gen. 46: 2-7

During his whole life, no matter what happened, Joseph lived by the following rule that we also want to live by. What is the rule Joseph lived by? ______________________
This rule was stated more than a thousand years after Joseph
* by Jesus who said “Do unto others as _____________________”
* by the Apostle Paul who said: …..“to be spiritually _________ is life and peace.”
Rom. 8: 6
*by Mary Baker Eddy who said, “The rich in _______ help the poor in one grand brotherhood, all having the same Principle, or Father; and blessed is that man who seeth his ___________ _________ and supplieth it, seeking his own in another’s good.” SH 518: 15-19

Put this rule (mental conviction) into your own words, for example,
* ‘the only safety is in trust and kindness.’
* ‘I may not be able to change the human situation, but I can always move forward since progress is the law of God.’
* ‘an honest heart overcomes all obstacles.’
*

Soul

Soul 2-15-09 Sara Lincoln

Are you beautiful? ____ What is ‘beauty’?

Is “the Lord our God” beautiful? __
See Ps. 90: 17 let. “The beauty of the Lord our God {is} upon us” in many ways:
God forgives sins, heals diseases, and saves lives.
God wraps us in goodness and makes everything come out right. Ps. 103: 1-6 The Message
Beauty is not just a special gift to some people.
“Beauty is a thing _____ ________ which dwells forever in the _________ _______...”
SH 247: 21-22

Do you have dominion over all things? ____
What is dominion?
One place in the Bible where it says that God gave man dominion over all the earth is in ______________. One place in our textbook where it says that God gives man dominion is 307: 25-26:
“The divine Mind is the Soul of man, and gives man dominion ______ _____ _______.”
Beauty and dominion are related. The Psalmist said it this way (Ps. 84: 11):
“The Lord God is a sun and shield” – our dominion
“The Lord will give grace and glory” – our beauty
Everyone who lives an honest and unselfish life will have everything s/he needs, or in other words, “no good thing will {the Lord} withhold form them that walk uprightly.”

Absalom was a son of King David. He was handsome to look at, praised for his beauty. But Absalom forgot that God is the only source of good and that man is a reflection of good. He did not defend himself against pride and selfishness. He tried to trick the people of Israel into trusting him and rejecting King David. He even tried to have King David killed, but Absalom got killed instead. Absalom was defeated and killed because he refused true beauty. He rejected “the lovely qualities that uplift the mind and spirit.” (Absalom’s story is in II Samuel 15-18).

Everyone has ‘a personality’ but that personality cannot be trusted. It cannot help you when you most need help. Everyone also has ‘an individuality.’
Your individuality is your spiritual sense, your God-given d______________.
Our textbook says, “Personality is not the individuality of man. A wicked man may have an attractive personality.” SH 491: 25
Personality can include human will which interrupts harmony. SH 490: 3
Your individuality is the “affection and purpose of {your} heart.” SH 8: 28-30
The affection and purpose of your heart is to obey the two greatest commandments:
Love ________ and _______ your neighbor as yourself. Matt. 22: 36-40

The Prophet Isaiah reminds us that God has made a contract (or c____________) with us. Isa. 42: 6-8 God has given us the desire and ability “to open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison…” Jesus knew that his purpose was _____________.
God makes ‘healing’ the affection and purpose of every heart.
One time two blind men followed Jesus, asking for healing. Jesus was willing and able to heal them, but he said something else is also essential: “According to _______ ________be it unto you.” Matt. 9: 27-31. Jesus knew the individuality of these men included faith in God. He called on them to admit and trust their faith.

Christian Science also says to everyone in the world, ‘be free; it’s your right.’
It’s only illusion, not divine law, that seems to limit people and make them sick or afraid.
What is an ‘illusion’?
If limitation and disease were God’s law, would Jesus have disregarded God’s law by healing people? _______ SH 227: 24-2

A disciple of Jesus named Tabitha / Dorcas did much good for many people. She got sick and some said she died, but the disciple Peter came and said to her, ‘Arise.’ She opened her eyes, saw Peter, and sat up. Peter ‘lifted her up’. Acts 9: 36-41. How beautiful is that! It’s like Peter was calling on her to remember that God, Soul, is her life.
Peter and Dorcas both accepted ‘the beauty of the Lord’ (Ps. 90: 17). They were both true to the qualities that uplift mind and spirit, body too! That’s the beauty of the Lord! That’s the beauty of holiness: SH 135: 12-15

Soul speaks directly to you for you are the r_________________ of Soul.
Soul also speaks through Christian Science, the law of God which “reverses the false testimony of the p_____________ s________________.”
“…by this reversal mortals arrive at the fundamental ______ ___ _______.” SH 120: 7-9

Is there something in your life that makes you a little bit afraid? ____
How can you meet and defeat every challenge?
I can remember and thank God that Soul gives me the true view of everything, and shows me how to speak with authority, also called d______________.

Jesus always spoke with authority and dominion. When the Roman soldiers were taking him away to be crucified, Peter tried to defend his Master by cutting off the ear of Malchus. Jesus commanded Peter, “Put up your sword,” then he restored Malchus’ ear. John 18: 10

Definition: Beauty is a combination of qualities that uplifts the mind or spirit; loveliness.

Spirit

Spirit 2-8-09 Sara Lincoln

What is ‘paganism,’ and how is it different from ‘Christianity’?
Paganism means trusting ___________________ instead of ________________.
Christianity means trusting _________________ instead of ________________.

Christianity, Christian Science, show us that there’s only one God, therefore it is natural for us to (1) trust God and (2) refuse to trust or fear any other ‘gods.’ What do Moses’ 10 Commandments tell us about trusting God and not fearing opposition?
The Bible has many stories that tell how people trusted God and refused to fear.
See the separate page with reminders about these Bible stories.

The word ‘paganism’ may not be used as much today as it was hundreds of years ago. Christian Science says it is m_______ m_______ that trusts in matter and material sense. Trust in matter does not help man grow and develop. On the other hand, “God expresses in man the infinite idea forever developing itself…” SH 258: 13-14

The Scientific Statement of Being tells us that “___________ is the real and eternal; __________ is the unreal and temporal.” SH 468: 12-13
In the Gospels, Christ Jesus tells us in many ways that ‘no man can serve (trust) _________ ___________.’ Matt. 6: 24
Christianity and paganism, Spirit and matter, are opposites so we cannot trust both.

But where did you get a mortal mind that trusts and fears material sense? Watch out!
That is a trick question! God is the only Creator and did not give you a mind that is limited and material, therefore, you need not accept a mind that is limited and material.
If I am not going to accept a mind that is limited, what am I going to accept instead? ___
I am going to seek and find wisdom and unlimited ability in the words of the prophets.
* The prophet Isaiah said, “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon ________. Isaiah 60: 1
* The prophet Mary Baker Eddy said, “Rise in the strength of _________ to resist all that is unlike good. God has made ______ capable of this…” SH 393: 12
* The principal prophet, Christ Jesus, said there’s only one way you can escape from the limitations of material sense. Look at what Christ Jesus said to Nicodemus, the Pharisee who wanted to know how Jesus healed people of sin, disease, and death. Jesus told Nicodemus, “Ye must be _________ _________.” John 3: 7

How can anyone be born again? _________
Easy, if I’m willing to think correctly, to remember often that I think the thoughts unfolded by the one Mind, the one God. I do not think the ‘suggestions’ of a limited mind made by another so-called god.
And also not always easy because it seems that most people believe they have minds of their own which can connect with God or ignore God or doubt God. That’s paganism!
Paganism means trusting material sense /matter instead of spiritual sense / substance.
The Apostle Paul encourages us by assuring us that we are not stuck with limited minds. Paul said, “Let ______ ______ be in you, which was also in _______ ______. Phil. 2: 5

Paul said it’s “the manifestation of the ________” which results in the unlimited ability and talent that you have. The scientific* statement of being says that “all is infinite Mind {Spirit}and its infinite manifestation {spiritual man} for God is __________________.” SH 468: 10-11
*(If a statement is ‘scientific’ it has been proved and can be proved again.)

What abilities and talents do you receive from God, Spirit, Mind? ______________

What limitations do you receive from God, Spirit, Mind? _______________

When I ‘let this mind be in me which was also in Christ Jesus,’ I say things like this:

1. I am intelligent and alert. I remember every day and during the day that I express all-knowing Mind and all-satisfying Spirit. I do not want ‘a mind of my own’ because I do not want to be limited.
2. God creates man / me to have dominion, to have only good and no limits.
Thank you God!
3. The all-knowing Father-Mother loves me even when I sometimes doubt myself.
God, Spirit, always shows me what to think and what to do.

I use this prayer from Miscellaneous Writings, page 400: 19. Do you?
Father-Mother good, lovingly
Thee I seek, --
Patient, meek,
In the way Thou hast, --
Be it slow or fast,
Up to thee.

What other things do you think or say when you are letting the mind of Christ Jesus
be in you? _________________

The Bible has many stories that tell how people trusted God and refused to fear:

Abraham. In Abraham’s day, there was no Christianity; only paganism. When Abraham thought a god had told him to kill his son Isaac, Abraham heard the One God say to him, do not kill your son. Leave that pagan land and I will establish you in a land, a Promised Land, where there will be abundance and safety for all.

Joseph. When Pharaoh, King of Egypt, could not understand his dreams, Joseph
(a prisoner) offered to interpret the dreams, to tell their meaning. Joseph said, ‘I can’t explain those dreams, but God will explain them and we will all be saved.’ Joseph did interpret the dreams and saved Egypt from seven years of drought.

Moses. When Moses and a million descendants of Jacob / Israel needed to get across the Red Sea in order to reach the Promised Land, Moses asked God, ‘What shall we do?’
Moses trusted God’s instruction to step into the water and walk across the sea on dry land.

David. King Saul was jealous of David who accepted and expressed the spirit of God. King Saul chased David around the country, but David was always listening for Mind’s guidance and David refused to fear, so he was safe, and eventually he became the King of Israel.

Jesus. When Jesus’ enemies were trying to push him off the cliff, he just walked calmly through the crowd and returned to his disciples.

Peter. The disciple Peter was put in prison because he taught the people about Christ Jesus. Peter trusted God, and refused to fear. The church members also prayed constantly for Peter. One day, Peter’s chains fell off and he walked out of prison.
