Unreality

This is the discussion sheet I will use with my junior high Sunday School students on October 5, 2008. Its title is the title of the Bible Lesson that students of Christian Science have been studying since September 29. “SH” refers to Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.

Unreality 10-5-08 Sara Lincoln
Circle the words that describe Christian Science and God’s plan for you:
Asleep – awake Night – day Darkness – light Fiction – non-fiction
Truth – error Dream – understand Matter – spirit Mortal man – immortal man
The old man – the new man Holiness – selfishness Powerless – Principle
Self control – envy Sinful – sinless Freedom – slavery Ignorant - inspired

‘Life in mortalmindmatter’ is a ________ of sleeping Adam, not a fact of your Life.
SH 282: 28-31 and SH 556: 17
Read about the ‘waking dream – sleeping dream’ in SH 250: 15-25
Is the dreamer real? ____ Is the dream real? ____ 530: 26-29 The dream…
“It is high time to awake out of sleep…” Rom. 13: 11-13

Mortals dream that sin, sickness, and death happen to man. Thinkers seek and find the Science which proves that if God didn’t make it, it’s a dream, an illusion. An illusion would try to make you groggy and stupid, but it cannot be another god and we refuse illusions with authority. We dismiss the illusion and discover God, again.
Which phrases in the scientific statement of being ‘refuse illusions’?
Thinkers choose what they are going to think. Name some true and untrue thoughts:
I choose these thoughts and things that are true and real:
I refuse these thoughts and things that are untrue and unreal:

How does error (unreality) begin? SH 539: 3 543: 17-18
Was ‘Adam’ the first human? ____ The author of Genesis 2 – 4 thought so, but then he also believed in a limited god that could not control its creation. This god put Adam to sleep. SH 556: 17 and created an Eve with a mind of her own.
A better choice for first human is A_____________. The author of Gen. 17: 1-2 believed in one Almighty God that makes a covenant with man and causes man to be fruitful.

Was the first man human? ____ No, the first man was created in the _______ __ _____
(Gen. 1: 27) and man was male and female.
Male and female are not opposites. Male and female is completeness.
The first male/female ‘man’ was not matter or material, and yet God told them to
“be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it.” Gen. 1: 27-28
Is it matter or idea that can be forever fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth?

Mary, Martha, and Lazarus were friends of Jesus. Unfortunately, they all believed (dreamed) that Lazarus died. He lay in a cave for four days. When Jesus arrived, he said, ‘take away the stone’ blocking the cave opening.
What did Jesus do next, and why did he thank God? John 11: 41-44; SH 75: 12
“If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.” John 8: 51 and SH 428: 3-8

Spiritual idea is reality. Mortalmindmatter is unreality.

Are Sin, Disease, and Death Real?

This is the discussion sheet I will use with my junior high Sunday School students on October 12, 2008. Its title is the title of the Bible Lesson that students of Christian Science have been studying since October 6. “SH” refers to Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.

Are Sin, Disease, and Death Real? 10-12-08 Sara Lincoln

Tell us Jesus’ parable of the younger son who took his inheritance (allowance), spent it in a selfish and foolish way, ending up hungry and homeless. Why did he return home to his father, and how did his father receive him? Luke 15: 11-24
Here is how Habakkuk describes God in the Golden Text, “Art thou not from everlasting, O Lord my God, mine Holy One? ...Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity:” (1: 12 , 13) How is this ‘God’ like the father in Jesus’ parable?

Is God there to help even if I’ve given up and decided to just live with the problem the best I can?______ How do you know?
What was the Psalmist sure of? Psalm 139: 7-10 and Psalm 119: 151
What was the Prophet Isaiah sure of? Isa. 43: 1-3 (to:), and Isa. 41: 11-13
Genesis 1: 26 assures that we have __________________. Isaiah 41: 15-16 is one way you can act out ‘dominion.’ Can you paint another word picture of acting out dominion?

Why does Christian Science maintain that sin, sickness, and death are unreal, especially when mortal nomind argues, “I see them; they are real!” SH 472: 24-30 All
Why do many people in the world, in your school, believe that sickness is as real as health? SH 130: 26. Can people believe that a good God makes or allows evil? SH 130 32

‘Sin’ means believing in more than one God. A ‘sinner’ is one who “would make a reality of _________, -- would make that real which is __________,” SH 339: 11-15.
You get rid of sin (error) by knowing that it has no _______ or _______ SH 339: 28.

Our textbook says, “In divine Science, man is the true image of God.” 259: 6.
Another way of saying “in divine Science” is to say ___________ SH 592: 18

What is the ‘seal’ of Christian Science? Where do you find it and what does it say?
It is written on the door of our Reading Room. Let’s go see. How big is it?

In Luke 8: 41-42, 49-56, Luke tells us about a 12 year old girl. Family and friends said she was dead. Jesus said, “Weep not; _____ ___ ____ ____, but sleepeth” (verse 52). The family did not accept this truth, but that did not bother Jesus. He took her by the hand and told her to arise, and she did. Why didn’t Jesus accept the ‘evidence’ that she was dead? SH 584: 15 and 289: 14.

If God were to look in the mirror, you know, God would see “his image and likeness” and that’s __________.

Good Creator / good creation is real, now and forever.
Sin, Disease, and Death are not real, now or ever!

Reality

This is the discussion sheet I will use with my junior high Sunday School students on September 28, 2008. Its title is the title of the Bible Lesson that students of Christian Science have been studying since September 22. “SH” refers to Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.

Reality 9-28-08 Sara Lincoln

What is a ‘prophet’? Does a prophet foretell the future or prophesy about the present? How does your definition fit with the definition of ‘prophet’ in
Science & Health, 593: 4?

In the Old Testament, there are two long books by 2 ‘major’ prophets: _______________ and _________________.
There are also shorter books by 12 ‘minor’ prophets.
Let’s read the names of these minor prophets, the last 12 books in the Old Testament.

Who is Isaiah talking to in our Golden Text (Isa. 60: 1, 4 to 1st :)?
Isaiah says, be a prophet and see what’s true, not what appears to be.

Two of the most important prophets in the Old Testament are E___________
and E___________. (Remember, ‘j’ comes before ‘s’ in the alphabet).
Elisha wanted to be as great a prophet as his teacher, Elijah, so Elisha said, please, “…Let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.” (II Kings 2). That was a good desire, but it’s not enough to have a human model. A person who wants to help others by being a ‘prophet’ keeps thought focused on reality, on what’s true and good and real. A prophet does not look to person, but to Principle, to God: SH 513: 26-27; 335: 27-28; 129: 22-24.

The dictionary gives this definition of reality: “a real event, entity, or state of affairs; something that’s neither derivative nor dependent.” Christian Science expands that definition to include _________. SH 472: 24-25 All
Why do we need the Christian Science definition?

The greatest prophet in the Bible was always focused on ‘reality,’ not on what appeared to be, and he blessed everyone by this teaching and healing. His name was ________. Jesus teaches us what mental qualities we need to identify with if we want to be ‘blessed’ and ‘see God,’ see what is true and good and real, not what appears to be. What qualities does Jesus mention? (Matt. 5: 2-12).

Last week we reviewed one of his parables which teaches us to stay focused on the wheat (good) and refuse to be distracted or discouraged by the weeds (evil). He taught us a prayer that includes the line, “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil;” Who is the other great prophet who knew what Jesus meant, who knew that God does always deliver us from evil? _____________________.
How does she explain this line in the Lord’s Prayer?

You can be a prophet and see what’s true and good and real in yourself, in your family, and in your world, by studying the words and thinking about the works of these two teacher prophets: ________________________ and ________________________.
What two books contain their words and works? _______________________________?

Elisha and Mary Baker Eddy were student prophets before they became great prophets. It’s the same for us. We are student prophets, learning in the Christian Science Sunday School how to ‘see’ and ‘speak’ what’s true and good and real.

Matter, homework assignment and Sunday discussion sheet

Email assignment on Matter

On Sunday, September 21, be ready to tell Jesus’ parable of the tares and the wheat,
Matt. 13: 24-30. Farmers know about wheat and weeds (another name for tares)
Students of Christian Science have other ways of describing opposites, as represented by wheat and weeds. I will give you a few examples then you add your own.

For example,
wheat could be ability - - - - - - --- tares (weeds) could be helplessness
wheat could be strength - - -- - ---- tares (weeds) could be _____________
wheat could be ___________ - - - tares (weeds) could be sickness
wheat could be ___________ - - - tares (weeds) could be _____________
wheat could be ___________ - - - tares (weeds) could be _____________
wheat could be ___________ - - - tares (weeds) could be _____________

See SH 72: 13: Wheat represents a ________________ sense of life.
Tares / weeds represent a _________________ sense of life.

In his parable of ‘the tares and the wheat’ in Matthew 13: 24-30, Jesus is saying that even though you choose good thoughts and plant these good thoughts in your heart, problems and challenges seem to come up.
Will you continue to choose truth even though error sometimes seems to happen? ______

Here’s my telling of the parable. You may have a different story about wheat and weeds.
You say or do something nice and get criticism or anger in return. Jesus said and did good things and mortal no-mind (hiding in the consciousness of some Pharisees) hated him for it, even tried to kill him. Maybe that’s why he taught us the parable of the weeds and the wheat.
Planting good seed is like having good thoughts and doing good things. Planting good seed is also about claiming your dominion as God’s image and likeness. Seeing weeds appear instead of wheat is like getting criticized for your good thoughts and deeds, or having doubts about yourself and forgetting your dominion.
Not to worry, said Jesus. Don’t be sad about who you are or mad at others. At harvest time, when thinking / doing good has become your way of life, not just an occasional event, all your right motives and acts will be acknowledged and rewarded. All effect and memory of wrong motives and acts will be wiped out, destroyed, just like weeds are left behind and later burned off after the wheat is harvested.

How would you tell the story of the wheat and weeds?

Matter, Sunday discussion sheet

This is the discussion sheet I will use with my junior high Sunday School students on September 21, 2008. Its title is the title of the Bible Lesson that students of Christian Science have been studying since September 15. “SH” refers to Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.

Matter 9-21-08 Sara Lincoln

What did you learn from the parable of ‘the tares and the wheat’? Matt. 13: 24-30

Wheat and weeds are opposites. Wheat is made into bread or cereal;
weeds are thrown into the trash or burned off.
According to our Golden Text (Rom 8: 5),_________ and _________ are also opposites.

Every Sunday, after our class, we gather in the center to sing a hymn.
Then the Superintendent reads a ‘Declaration of Independence’ (from SH 468)
called the _______________ _______________ ___ ________ .
We declare our independence from ______________, a word mentioned ______ times.
The opposite of matter is M________ and m________.
What is the name of the liar that says ‘God made matter,’ and ‘man is matter’?
The liar’s name is ___________ no- __________.
The opposite of a material lie is a _____________ ________.

Christ Jesus never used the word ‘matter’ but did he teach us what to do about matter?
Matter can look like an infirmity, which is a disease or defect. Last week we found out what Jesus told the man lying beside a pool of water in the part of town called Bethesda, John 5: 2-9. Why didn’t Jesus help the man get into the pool?
Jesus knew the man did not have an infirmity.
Man is the image and likeness of God, therefore man is whole and healthy.

Jesus taught many truths by telling stories called __________.
God plants wheat -- gives man everything he needs: intelligence, patience, gratitude. Mortal no-mind tries to plant tares -- confusion, discouragement, fear.
Which of these six states of mind is planted in you?

Was Christ Jesus the first man who refused to believe in matter?
Did Elisha the prophet refuse to believe in matter? II Kings 4: 1-7

How about this church, these books, your house. Aren’t they made of matter? _____
If they are not matter, what are they? ___________________
A ‘manifestation’ is something you can see and touch, but it is not matter. Are you a manifestation? Look again at SH 468: 10. I like being a manifestation because I will be one forever!!
Where would you find the definition of ‘man’? SH page _______.
The first four words say __________ ______ ______ ______________.
Find a sentence that begins ‘Man is………… .’

What is the ‘seal’ of Christian Science, and where can you find it?
Does the seal of Christian Science mention matter?

Substance

This is the discussion sheet I will use with my junior high Sunday School students on September 14, 2008. Its title is the title of the Bible Lesson that students of Christian Science have been studying since September 8. “SH” refers to Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.

Substance 9-14-08 Sara Lincoln
St. Paul says in II Cor. 9: 6-8 CEV that “God can bless you with everything you need, and you will always have more than enough to do all kinds of good things for others.”
What do you need to help you do good things for others? ___
Which of these things you need is mentioned in The Beatitudes, Matt. 5: 3-12?

Job was a man in the Bible who went through a terrible attack on his health and family and home. As Job struggled to understand God’s role in all this, he asked God the question that many people in the world ask: ‘what do we gain from praying and worshipping you?’ Job 21: 15 CEV How would you answer Job’s question?
Do you remember whether or not God answered Job’s question? Job was faithful and patient, and God did indeed answer by restoring Job’s health, family, and home.

Is substance made of ‘matter’ or ‘thought’? __________
Which substance is strongest: fire, water, flesh, or thought? __________
What do you remember about the story of three men who worshipped the one God and would not bow down to a gold statue made by King Nebuchadnezzar? (Review Daniel 3). What name would you give to the fourth man who was walking around in the fire with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego? __________
Daniel said “the form of the fourth is like the Son of God” (vs. 25) and that would be
the__________, God’s manifested ‘thought’ about the substance of man.
Our textbook describes that state of mind as ________ _________________ SH 161: 5
How did Jesus handle the claim of ‘healing water’ at Bethesda? John 5: 2-9

Does it ever seem like ‘matter’ is substance? ______ ‘Substance/matter’ is not a fact,
not even a thought. It is only a sugg____________, a lie actually, so what can give us immediate help when ‘matter’ seems like ‘substance’? _________
Christ is true thought, true substance, the true idea voicing good and always speaking to the ____________ ____________________. SH 332: 9-11

About 2000 years ago when the prophet Elisha was going about doing good, he met a woman who was in great trouble. Her husband had died and she had no money to pay their debts. The ‘creditors’ (bankers) were going to sell her two sons into slavery. Elisha made a strange request. What did he tell her to do, and what happened? II Kings 4: 2-7
This was a demonstration of the __________, true thought, true _____________.
As SH says, “___________ is the only substance, the invisible and indivisible infinite God,” 335: 12-13. Let’s see if we know what the three underlined words mean.

“Mortals must look beyond fading, finite forms, if they would gain the _______ ______
____ _________.” SH 264: 7-8 If we want God’s creation, true substance, to be more visible, we need to “gain more correct views of ______ _____ _____. SH 264: 13
Last week we named two books that give you these more correct views of God and man.
Can you name a place where people give you new thoughts, new insights, about everyone’s relationship to God, to substance? ________________

The ‘substance’ of a thing is the basic ‘reality’ of that thing. Is this true? ___________

Webster’s Ninth defines man: “a human being; a male, the human race; mankind. Christian Science: the compound idea of infinite Spirit: the spiritual image and likeness of God: the full representation of Mind.” Are you surprised to see this in a dictionary?

According to God, the Creator of man, what is the meaning of ‘man’? ______________
In what books would you look for God’s definition of man? ______________________

One of the Psalmists says that God made man to have _________________. Ps. 8: 3, 4, 6

Can ‘man’ walk on the water? ________
What Christ-man walked on the sea to reach the boat where the disciples were? John 6: 16-21
We know these are not just stories but were actual events, because “when man is governed by God, the ever-present Mind who understands all things, man knows that with God
_________ _______________ ___________ ______________.” SH 180: 25-27

The so-called opposite of ‘man’ is another word starting with ‘m’: _________________
‘Man’ always knows what s/he needs to know. ‘Mortal’ is always limited and uncertain.
Which are you, man or mortal? __________ The way to be man, not mortal, is to admit to yourself that “man is ____________ ________ ___________________.” SH 90: 24-25
When you admit this, you hear and see and do God’s _____ and you “master the infinite ____.”

What ‘man’ in the Bible teaches us the most about exercising our dominion? ________ _______.
In what books do you find the teachings of Jesus: ____________, ________, _______, ________, and _________________________________.
Jesus’ mission was “to prove what God is and what He _______ ______ _______.” SH 26: 16-18

Know what God is, what man is, what you are, speak with authority, and never _______ _____.

But what about war, famine, drought, earthquake, hurricane, and fire?
Can ‘man,’ can you, do anything about these? SURE. Jesus gives us some tips in Matt. 24:
Don’t be tricked (deceived) into thinking there’s another god, another cause and effect;
Don’t be troubled just because some people believe in a god that causes destruction;
Don’t be afraid when beliefs in matter & mortality are exposed and destroyed;
Don’t forget to thank God often for _______________
And remember, man does nothing of himself. What God does, man does. John 5: 19
